Sound imaging has been around for a while.
No, I didn't listen to it, I'm too lazy to enable Flash in Mozilla.

Ah okies. Yeah it's pretty cool, then Dolby and shit came out so no one does much with base tech anymore. Used to know something about it, forgot it since though.

Back in the late 90's, Aureal had a sound card that could do quite a bit of 3d imaging. Until Creative bought and buried it.
The games Thief I and II worked very nicely with that card, and you could tell the position of the guards by listening for the footsteps quite accurately.

My ears must be broken then. I heard the change in tone and left/right shifting but not much else.
X-Fi series have this effect built in, called CMSS-3D, it's quite nice. Headphones > *.

I actually remember that. Funny part was during those days, sound and games were really advancing, then it all stoped around the 2000's. The whole "immersive" feeling just went away and now its all about whos the loudest and baddest.
Typical.

Head Related Transfer Function
Basically functions (equations) that describe how a sound wave should change depending on its virtual location in relation to your head.
EDIT: It's an excellent recording thats been properly rendered which helps lend it so much believability.
That's awesome, I almost thought that it wasn't coming from my headphones.

Very cool stuff. If i closed my eyes i really thought someone was lighting my hair on fire (I lit my hair on fire to add effects).

Works good with Surround sound speakers as well, but that is extremely obvious

Ok I tried it myself and it is coming out of the rear channels but I didn't hear anything from the centre
EDIT: after turning off CMSS it only comes out of 2 channels.
Maybe thats why Call of Duty 2 sounded so awesome when I was playing it with headphones. I normally have that stuff turned off..... Maybe next time i'll leave it on :bigthumb:

CMSS (with a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1), but I thought it could not upmix non-5.1 signals into perfect 5.1, because that Flash is absolutely perfect
