Why is it that people who know nothing about computers end up with 60 entires in adaware, 2 viruses in mcafee 6, and 6 more viruses/trojans in AVG free? and 2 more in Spybot?
Why do these people download untold amounts of virus infested crap? What the hell are they doing on their computers? randomly clicking ads and going to sites linked to in spam emails?
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING ARGGGGG
Also AVG free is better than McAfee 6. It found about 6 more viruses.
I'm almost tempted to pay for it

Yes. because they're suckers.
this one girl used our computer for a while.......it was pretty much worthless after that. frikken hell, if i ever get my own computer, NOBODY'S touching it 'cept me :grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
People trust emails. They treat them even more seriously than they do normal mail. If you asked your average non-PC person whether they would reply to a nigerian prince who wrote a letter offering a million dollars if you would just send him two thousand they would laugh and say he just wants your two thousand. Send that same person the same proposition in an email and all of a sudden it's credible. I just don't get it.
Don't let lollan know you were using mcafee.

I have Trojans really deep in my computer's anus. I'm too horny to scan my porn for spyware.
Oh yeah, and I used to have Limewire and sampled every other free downloader with its own retarded platform back before I learned about direct torrents.

I use AVG but I just as well might not because it didn't give a single warning our found a single virus (or even suspicious file) in as long as I've been using it...
I do a spyware search every so often (twice a year or something) and usually it only finds tracking cookies...
And yes, I do a lot of pr0n surfing...

I used to go without antivirus, and the one time I got a virus was when I knowingly launched a suspicious file (I was desperate for the app, and knew it was most likely infected) instantly knew it was, turned around and immediately removed the virus manually, then did an online scan to make sure it was gone, and it was
the reason I hated antivirus programs were simple: bloatware that hogged system resources and companies that demanded yearly repurchases then eventually ridiculously high subscriptions, that all changed when I found AVG, which is free, light, and no BS

Also the only reason why I keep it running. It does what it needs to do and you hardly ever notice it is there. The occasional update when you switch on the system and that's it. It never bothers you if it doesn't need to...

Today, actauly when I go home tonight, will be the first time in, oh, posibly ten years that I willn ot have Nort antivius installed on my main computer. I figure no reason to redo it when my version probably won't work with Vista anyway.
Damnit, that means Norton SystemWorks isn't going to work either :(
I've had that little stop light icon in my system tray for years, damn. Maybe I'll get lucky on that but doubt it.
Only virus I ever got I got all by myself, a file a buddys mom sent me just weeks after she told she saw South Park for the first time and thought it was hillarious. So I get an email from her with an attatchment with Stans head for an icon. If it haden't of been so soon after her telling me about South Park I never would have even clicked on it, but she ain't far removed from my own mom so I clicked. Nothing happened, so I right clicked and picked open and nothing happened and I knew I was screwed. Thing ate right through my system memory, I had to install as much memory as I could to be able to get online long enough to find a fix.

The design of some antiviruses are downright ridiculous, Norton for example now requires you to "log in" to the program to make changes or to even shut it down, so how do you log in? click "Log in", WTF? and not to mention the complete locking-down of certain folders unless you turn the damn thing off
protection and paranoia to the point where it interfers with the user and irritates them is bad design

What the hell Scott, McAfee?? :grrf: And seriously, if you think that's an "infested" system, you haven't seen anything. I've removed thousands upon thousands of viruses pretty commonly. Not so much nowadays because Microsoft has gotten pretty good with it's patches though. With Ad-Aware, I bet most of those were probably tracking cookies too, not a big deal. Sadly, I must disagree with you on AVG. It's pretty much one of the worst antiviruses out there nowadays and has really gone downhill over the years, even McAfee tests much better than it sadly (see: http://av-comparatives.org/).
If you're going to use a free antivirus, definitely use Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/). Not only does it beat every antivirus out there, it's also completely free. :) There's a pay version that does a little more, gets rid of spyware, but there's plenty of free programs that can replace that. I recommend SUPERAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) (sounds and looks fishy, but it's really the best spyware remover I've used in a good while, even gets those smitfrauds out of your system without the use of a specific utility) and Spybot S&D.

He can suck it on Norton :P
I've used Norton for ten fucking years, and the only virus I ever got was one I specificaly gave myself by repeatedly fucking up and clicking on a file I should have known better to click on :D
They aren't the best in the world, and they aren't the cheapest and they aren't the lowest resource user of the industry, but it's a solid product as far as I'm concerned. I have zero bitches about Norton.
But then I use Norton SystemWorks 2002, which was the last version before they made you connect to their servers to authenticate, heh. I'll tell you, SystemWorks pulled my ass out of the fire back when I lived in Boulder and knew NO ONE in regards to computers. I had a sector go bad on my HDD, and lucky be the stars in that sector was part of a file Windos needed to run Scandisk, so it was unable to run, so it was unable to mark the bad sector, so I was unable to even turn boot Windows up.
No other palce to go, I went to Staples and asked their tech dude what he would use and he said he uses Nortons SystemWorks, so bought that, booted off the floppies, and Nortons moved everything on my comoputer over, checked the HDD, marked the bad sector, moved everything back. All I had to do was change some folders back that it marked as files, or the other way around, can't remember. Took me five minutes though.
Been a fan ever since, but then as I said, I don't use any of the last few versions. They may be total hogs, don't know. Right now my definitions are out of date, but I'm not going to renew them until I figure out what I'm going to use after slapping Vista on my system.
McCafee, though, that thinsg just sucks. I don't understand how they can keep making such a weak product and be as big as they are. I mean, shit, I bought my Mom the Internet pack, virus, spam, firewall, etc. a couple of years ago. Installed it one day, uninstalled it by the end of the week, it just totaly took over her system. It was ugly. Still got the damn thing sitting on a shelf at the store with all my old crap, heh.

Give me a break, it may have been good back in the day, but it's a piece of utter shit nowadays. I have no complaints about the detection rates other than their heuristic detection sucking. You say you never got a virus, that has nothing to do with Norton, that just means you never got a virus, it didn't have to do any work. Norton very often runs into problems with polymorphic viruses (constantly changing their code) and will quarantine them, but never gets the source. I've seen systems with GBs and GBs (read where one guy ran out of HDD space completely because he had 70GB of quarantined viruses from Norton) It takes me longer to install and update Norton than it does for me to run a complete scan with most other antiviruses.
It's bloated horribly, you can take a fully formatted system that under normal circumstances and an unbloated AV would run fine. The classic example I get at work is a Celeron with < 3.0Ghz and 128MB - 256MB of memory. Windows Updates, everything system is flawless. Put Norton on it and suddenly I have to recommend a memory upgrade. :ugh:
Norton VERY commonly breaks the BITS service which pretty much disables any kind of Windows Updates functionality and you will be very lucky to fix it, I run tools that specifically do this and have had to format several systems before AFTER I've cleaned them completely because of this shitty product.
Norton Internet Security, oh my god do you hate winsock or something? This is the most common "I can't get online" problem I've ever seen in my life. But no, disabling Internet Security completely doesn't fix this, you have to uninstall it. But what's that? The uninstaller doesn't even take everything out? Fine... I'll run SymNRT, Symantec's tool which actually does take everything out. But Winsock is still crippled, so then I have to run Winsockfix or LSPFix to get online. Now, tell me does it make ANY sense to run 2 separate uninstallers and 3 reboots just to get back online? HELL NO. By the way, you can't update Windows anymore, guess you have to format!
Not only does Norton frequently break Windows Update, it somehow manages to break it's own LiveUpdate commonly and I have no clue how it does that . But, you can't just reinstall it, you get to reinstall the whole product.
Sigh, 2 separate uninstalls and 3 reboots later you're got a "working" live update again! Too bad you can't get online, jackass.
In Conclusion
If you are running Norton Antivirus, dial: 1-585-350-0400 or 1-800-745-6055 and tell Symantec how much you despise their bloated, feature crippling, bloated piece of crap and get a refund!
