Anyone planning on seeing this?

I think it looks pretty good. It's got Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter....pretty solid cast.

it's a musical, but i think i can stomach it.

I'm excited about it. I love Tim Burton and Steven Sondheim (who is responsible for the musical aspect of the film and for the original musical) so I'm very excited. I think people give musicals a bad rap. This film looks very similar to Sleepy Hollow in style and execution. Burton is awesome at period films. Seeing this for sure.

Seriously. I think half of the female population that went to see every POTC went simply to stare at him for two and a half hours at a time, lol.

Sitting in the theater watching the movie, hearing the girls behind me talk about him.

I love Depp as much as the next teenage girl so I'll probably see this. It feels like it will be a guilty pleasure because of all the emo/goth kids that will go because it's Tim Burton and the teenage girls that will go for Depp and the emo teenage girls that will go and have the biggest O face the entire time because it's Johnny Burton.

On second thought I may have to wait to rent it because I'd probably go nuts in the theater and kill everyone.

even if the plot is bad...Johnny Depp might be this movie's shaving grace!

Jesus, they even had to change all thsi shit around for the movie. No damn reason to, more than enough shit in reality to make a helluva movie, but then they change almost everything about it just for the hell of it. I really, really hate that.

Spoilers, sort of;

And, ofcourse, spoiled the whole damn story for me because dumbass me I just happen to know the story.

Remember that the movie is using Stephen Sondheims stage production as its basis, which was very loosely based on fact

And that's a big enough warning label right there: Stephen Sondheims stage production.

Saw it....it's fantastic. Take it as its own entity, not as an adaptation or a fictionalization of actual events.

Indolentron and I saw this yesterday after reading a lot of good reviews.
I don't think I've even seen many musicals (the only one that springs to mind right away is Evita), but this was amazing. Seriously, as soon as we got home, the first thing we did was get the soundtrack.

Bloodiest musical ever.
And the ending! As someone on another forum I frequent said:
What I found interesting though was that, despite being such an amazing movie, there was no applause at the end. And the theatre was packed. There was just this tense silence followed by murmuring. The atmosphere of "What the fuck?" was almost palpable.

Oh, and sure there's Johnny Depp and the guy that plays Snape in the movie, but oh my! The young sailor boy! (http://imdb.com/name/nm2570429/) Looks like it was his first movie, I was impressed. Ditto for the young lady who played Johanna.

Also, how can you not love a movie where most of the female characters wear sexy tight corsets that make their boobs inflate every time they breathe? :naughty:

ROFL! The second I saw his pics I thought "I wonder if he's gay" (no offence to anyone...). then I saw this under message boards "is he gay???"

Lol, I had a completely different experience. The theater I was in was nearly empty and the sorostritutes whose parents hate them (it was during Christmas break on a college campus) didn't like the movie...and made it their goal to state as much. It was annoying as hell. I about punched a bitch after hearing the comment, "It's Tim Burton...what do you expect?"

I was pretty much the only one in the theater who came out with a smile of about 15 or so people. I'm gonna chalk that up as a fluke and lend those people some taste.

I went to a showing last night (my second time) and we too felt the "wtf" atmosphere. But it was soon shattered by an obvious pretentious broadway-goer who said "It was inaccurate, there wasn't that much blood on stage, that was ridiculous" she also complained about the vocal qualities of the actors... granted, Helena Bonham Carter isn't exactly Angela Lansbury (who originated the role onstage) but jeez. I personally thought everyone turned out a good performance.

And man oh man, that sailor guy, I melted every time he sang.

Did you re-freeze between his performances?

I saw it the other night, I thought the "sailor boy" looked like a neanderthal. I really liked Helena Bonham even with her forehead wrinkles. The scene in the field about the beach was g'damn fantastic. And that page Opus linked said they only don't sing for about 10 minutes but to me it felt like they only sang for about 10 minutes. Anyways I liked it.

When you have seen a Broadway quality show with people who are musically talented sometimes the movies just don't cut the mustard due to the actors limited vocal talent. Not saying the movie is bad or anything just not up to the Broadway show.

I really like Steven Sondheim 's work but somehow this falls a little flat.

I do like the use of the more pancake like make up on Depp and Carter that gives them a feeling like they sort of fell out of a silent film but maybe it's just too Tim Burton.

(As my one friend said "oh look Depp has Burton's hair again")

I'll admit that I liked the first part better but I wentto see the film blazed.

Sailor Boy was creepy.
If you listened (actually listened) to his song he talked a thin line between as mad an obsession as any.
Kudos to the corsets and the beach # although it reminded me or Eddy Scissorhands.
