View Full Version : Good movies you hated, bad movies you loved

I heard only good things about Munich. I found it exhausting. Never has such a violent movie bored me more.
As for a bad movie, I kind of liked Empire Records, despite the fact that by all accounts it's a pretty stupid movie. And boy it doesn't stand the test of time. I saw a few minutes of it on TV not too long ago and decided I need to invent a time machine so I can go back and slap some sense into 20-year-old Slacker. :laughat:
I hate and will continue to hate Casablanca. And I think it's complete b.s. that I'm supposed to revere it just because everyone else does. I think it's overly sentimental drivel and the only thing I really enjoyed about it was that it was short. There, I said it.
As for bad movies? I guess I really like the second Addams Family movie... and that Son in Law movie makes me laugh when it oughtn't.
good thread.
I thought Munich was pretty good actually...
I don't think I can post a decent reply in this thread, what with all those atrocious movies I love and all those 'classics' I avoid...
Well, maybe just one:
Didn't care for Casino in the slightest. Mafia related movies just aren't my thing (I thought the Godfather was ok, to watch once, but I don't need to ever see it again either). Casino was just uninteresting from start to finish despite all the violence. I didn't relate to anyone, I just didn't care about whatever it was they tried to do in the movie and it just kept on going...
As for bad movies... ...I started looking in the IMDB's bottom 100 until I came across a movie I liked. The first I have to admit to like is at #64: Battlefield Earth...
I also passed 2 Uwe Boll movies getting to #64, but I just can't say I actually liked either of those. Battlefield Earth on the other hand is enjoyable camp... ...with Harriers...

I absolutely hated Crash. I get angry even thinking about it's premise and the fact that it won best picture. I want to punch whoever wrote it in their racist face.
I also hated Sideways the first time I saw it. I don't mind it now, but I hated it then.
Meanwhile, I loved Stargate, I must have seen it over a hundred times now since me and my friend watched it every few days for a year.
I also loved Man in the Iron Mask, but I swear it's because I love Dumas, not because of the acting.
All Dogs Go to Heaven remains one of my favorite kids movies, and I've loved it since I was little.
Finally, Hostel: Part II was really good.
(I tried to find things in the 30-40% range, I couldn't find things much lower)

good thread.
You don't have to revere it, just acknowledge it for what it is and when it was made, it's a noir classic, it set the standard for an entire movie niche for decades to come. Personaly, I like to catch it now and then but it's been a long time since I sat through the etnire thing. I'd much rather catch Key Largo or The African Queen as far as Bogie goes.
Anyway, to paraphrase I might not know art but I know good andbad movies, and there'sa lot more inbetween. It comes down to what you think makes a movie 'good' or not. Personaly, I can't stand half the action bullshit on the screen today, all CGI and no substance. But that doesn't mean it's not entertaining.
Also, I can appreciate things and people for their talents or artistic quality even though Idon't like it or them. Michael Jackson, perfect example. No matter what you think of him that doesn't take away from his talent. Thriller's a modern classic, but I don't own it and never will.
I like bad movies that knowthey're bad and revel in it, role in it likea dog rolling in a rotted carcass on theside of the road, just oblivious to it's own badness. An aside to that is I like parodies and black comedies, though not so dark as to be sickening. There's a line somewhere I draw that constantly wavers as to how low something cango before I can't take it.
Dumb & Dumber is a perfect example. I despise that movie, though I Carey and Daniels are great, love other stuff by them, but the movie itself was so inane it was devoid of any redeeming value.
There is no good or bad, there's only what you like or not.
I couldn't really think of anything to post until I saw dopaMEAN's post about Crash and I must say that I thought the movie was absolute garbage. I even bought the movie before watching it because I figured that it couldn't be bad. The entire movie I was bored and I didn't care about any of the characters.

Crash was indeed, boring tripe.
Brokeback Mountain was hailed as a great picture, but it was long, drawn out, and overly boring.
I hated Titanic as well. bleah...
Add the Blair Witch Project to that list.

Yeah, I really didn't like Blair Witch Project either.
I was a ten year old girl when Titanic came out, so of course I loved it.
And I love gay guys, Ang Lee movies, and quiet landscape scenes, so Brokeback was good for me. I think that one was an acquired taste.

I don't know if that was intended, but I find it funny you post that right after Craig.

Is Craig the guy above me? I was responding to him, since I agree Brokeback could be seen as boring, and I wanted to justify why I liked it. I'm generally oblivious, so i don't know.

I Iike CoNAir for some reason, Steve Buscemi probably, it is piss fuckin poor tho... Sideways was gash, I hit Eject after less than an hour. I was disappointed by Collateral too :(
love high school movies
hate james bond
I always just turn Collateral off after the car flips and pretend thats the end of the movie, if you look at it that way its a pretty good ending.
I really like...Vanilla Sky, which no one else in the world seems to.
I very much despise Donny Darko, which everyone seems to love.
Ok, I hated the Ocean's movies. Oceans 11, 12, 13, all of em. I thought they were really boring...
Oh shit yeah, those movies are just masturbation material for middle aged women imo. I couldn't believe they made a second one, and when I saw the trailer for Ocean's 13 the second time I was snapped back into reality as I thought the first time I had seen it was actually just a dream :O
I also thought Munich was pretty good also. There is the book Vengance which lays things out like they actually happened and makes the movie more understandable.

monster sucked huge. i think theron won the academy award for that role too yet i thought she was terrible. all ugly and skitzed out the whole movie. she was overacting imo.
and the only bad movie that comes to mind might be white noise. i know i didnt hear much about it and i dont believe in ghosts but that movie scared the crap outta me. i was very creeped out watching i remember.
btw great movie no one prolly ever heard of.....amongst friends. loved it!

I had no trouble understanding Munich.
Also "The Grudge 2", being a scary movie and a sequel I expected crap I believe the rest of the world agreed but it was actually the scariest movie I've ever seen.
monster sucked huge... she was overacting imo.
I didn't think the movie sucked as such, but I also felt she was laying it on pretty thick. Strangely enough, after seeing some actual Eileen Wournos footage, that's the way the real woman acted as well, so you can't really blame Theron for trying to mimic the mannerisms accurately...

Check out White Noise 2: The Light.
Nathan Fillion (Cpt. Reynolds from Firefly) and Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck from BSG) star in it.

Me? I'm currently enjoying Night of the Comet.
Cheesy as hell but with some well done and clever tongue in cheek dialog and performances.

I thought Spiderman 3 was pretty much garbage. I didn't care much for any of the three Spiderman movies, but 3 was the worst. I should smack the director around for thinking he could cram a full TV series worth of storyline into 1 movie with bad acting and bad CG fight scenes.
I remember liking "Last Action Hero" back in the day, which was said to be really bad by most people at that time. I haven't seen it since then so I might feel differently now.
I thought Spidey 1 and 2 were the greatest superhero movies ever, but part 3 did indeed suck balls...
Last Action Hero is ace, no matter what anyone says...

Good Movies I hated:
*Apocalypse Now: God, what a pretentious piece of Vietnam-era angst. I saw both the original and the redux, found them both to be a snorefest
*Platoon: And thus begins and ends my example of why Oliver Stone is what is wrong with hollywood
*The Dear Hunter: I don't see what the big deal is with this movie. They never really built enough cohesion of who the characters were, beyond DeNiro, for me to care about their fates in Vietnam. Such great potential, but Oscar-winner? cmon
*Gladiator: Decent action movie, but Best Picture? Really? I was surprised when I saw its nomination for the Oscar. I didn't think the acting was particularly good, especially with J. Phoenix as the emperor.
*Gone with the Wind: The movie is a load of crap, from start to finish. And not even good crap - HOW IS THIS MOVIE POPULAR?
Bad Movies I Like:
*Equilibrium: I know, I know, its crap. But, once again, Christian Bale has such gravity as an actor, and does so well, that even with the weak-sauce script, he made me believe in the universe.

I also enjoyed Equilibrium and Con-Air. As far as Equilibrium goes, I'm with wolfe on Christian Bale, I don't think I have seen a movie yet with him in it that I didn't like.
Equilibrium was an awesome film, and I'll be buying it if it ever comes out on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

never saw the real woman in any footage but theron seemed over the top. it was like she was too kooked to stand still.
her being all ugly didnt help much either.
I think Charlize Theron did a great job acting in Monster, even tho the film itself was freakin' awful. If she seemed like the same person in every movie then she'd be a really bad actor... like Nicolas Cage.

Point 1 = :bigthumb:
Point 2 = I really like Vanilla Sky... You should check out the original (Open Your Eyes - ESP) if you haven't already.
Point 3 = YOU DIE!!! Donnie kicks rear!
Cop... don't hold it against me, I saw it at an impressionable age, you gotta admit the cast is pimpin' tho... Malkovitch (ratshit crazy but an good actor) BUscemi (The Don for fugly wannabes acting cool like me!) Rhames (Should have been Shaft instead of Jackson) Trejo (Johnny 23 FTW!)...
The opening gambit of Equilibrium kicks ass too!
Also everyone seemed to dislike the Resident Evil series but I think that they were awesome. I'm a huge fan of zombie movies all around though.

i thought the RE movies were the best based on a game i've seen. hell those flicks would win every academy award there is if it were just running against the tomb raider slop. or anything uwe boll shits out.
come to think of it the only other movie based on a game i even sorta liked was silent hill.
oh and milla just r0xx, small bewbz an all. ;)
RE1 and 3 were pretty decent I thought. 2 I'm not such a big fan of...
I felt Silent Hill was better than RE1. 2 hawt chicks > 1 hawt chick. Also it was just a creepier movie.
Also Cop just reminded me "Bad Santa" that movie was craptastic. Everyone thought it was rofltastic, wtf retard humor?
I laughed my ass of with Bad Santa, to the point even of being unable to stop laughing in the theatre during a certain scene. Where the fat kid walks up to Santa with this humongous wedgie
And everything with Bernie Mac is comedy gold as well. "What did you call me, small fry?" "I called you a fucking Guinea homo from the 15th fucking century"

I am a huge fan of bad movies. Glad someone else linked badmovies.org
I own a VHS copy of the movie said to be the worst every Manos: The Hands of Fate. They interviewed the MST3K guys and said "What is the worst movie you had to watch?" and they all said "Manos"
So I had to see it, of course. :)
I really dislike Nick Cage also. Did you know his real last name is Coppola? Might explain some of his success. He really is the same person in every movie.
Not a fan of romantic comedies at all but I thought As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson was a great flick.
Q: How do you write woman so well?
Jack Answers: "I start with a man and remove reason and accountability.
One thing I don't get is the popularity of the Bourne movies, Bourne Identity, Bourne superiority, Bourne Secret Sauce.
Just not a fan, my sister is a huge fan. I just recently watched them over the last few days, eh, no thanks.

really? He just made me feel uncomfortable like "I wish I were somewhere else and not witnessing this kid's weirdness".

LOL that's a Simpson's quote. McBain was at a party and he admitted his last movie wasn't very good. What I wrote above was Chief Wiggum's response. McBain then slumped his shoulders and walked away, saying something like, "Maria, my mighty heart is breaking. I'll be in the hum-vee."
I thought the quote reflected your personal feelings as well.

I have never gotten why so many westerns are considered to be such classics, not even the huge ones like Good, Bad & Ugly and other Leone movies. All I see is bland brown scenery, horses, dust, hats and ugly teeth. They just doesn't interest me in the slightest. Even less than mafia movies...
The only "western" I really like is 'The Quick and the Dead', but then that's not so much a western as it is a Sam Raimi movie...
opus512
12-13-07, 11:45 AM
I'd bother to suggest some lesser known classic westerns but most would be black and white, and if bland brown scenery don't work for you neither will black and white movies, heh.
But for the record, the original 3:10 to Yuma, as well as The Fastest Gun Alive are classic western nior.
But if you want bloody ass shit, check out Once Upon a Time in the West, and maybe The Wild Bunch.

Good movies I hated:
Going to side with Elaine Bennis here....the English Patient...I HATE IT!!!
Lost in Translation - the first in, what I'm sure will be a long list of, Sopphia Copolla movies I will hate! Seriously, chromosomes don't mean you should direct a movie
Sideways - I'm with that new chick...I HATED it at first, but now if I see it come on HBO, I'll simply turn it off (rather than throwing things at the TV as I had done previously)
What Planet are you From - two words make this the worst movie ever made....Gary Shandling
Bad Movies I loved:
Robocop...2 - that's right....Cain's goin' down!
FInal Fantasy: Advent Children - seriously god awfull movie...but I still get chills when Sephiroth is reborn
Homegrown - ok, terrible pothead perdictible shit...but Hank Azaria and Billy Bob Thornton are fucking hilarious...also the only movie I've ever seen that Ryan Phillipe was good in - also, how do you not love a movie where Jon Bonjovi plays an evil drug dealer?
:)
