View Full Version : well I finally did it.....
I ordered my new cpu, mobo, and cooler. I ended up going with an AThlon XP1600 guaranteed to oc to 1650, an Abit kt7a and an alpha PAL 8045. I swore I would never go AMD again but I guess I was wrong!! I just am not that impressed with the latest offerings from intel. They are no longer clearly superior like they used to be. With AMD's stability getting better recently from what I hear, and the pricing being so good, it was time try out an Athlon for myself. Coupled with my new TI 500 my machine should really rip!!

Cool. I bragged though, lol. Have you had one before? I love the board. Here's some info for you:

Flash the bios if you feel comfortable doing that. It helps a lot with some issues. I had some RAID issues and a flash cleared it right up :)
Nope, this is my first Athlon system. I have been an Intel guy up until now. I just hope my new system is as stable as my current one. My one expereience with AMD way back in th past was not a good one and that is what made me swear I wouldn't buy AMD again.Originally posted by msan_ewu

AMD wasn't the problem Sonik it was the motherboards and support from Windows was poor.
Now look at AMD and motherboards they have taken the market.....
I think it had to do with the fact that there were third parties making the mobo chipsets instead of AMD.

Just one thing, make sure that you have the vers.1.3 board (check
the barcode sticker on the board ) If you dont then its not going to support the XP 1600 ,it'll work, it just wont take atvantage of the features of the XP ,my advice would be to take it back if its not the 1.3 vers meaning that wherever you bought it from,is trying to pass on some old stock to you ...(which most comp stores try to do) dont accept anything less no matter what bull they tell you........check it out with ABIT if you dont believe me...
otherwise its a exellent choice for a non DDR board it overclocks very easily, everthing you need is in the Bios. Softmenu is the shit!

Easy enough to blame everyone else, but AMD WAS the problem back then. Just as much as the mainboards. Blah blah blah.
Yeah those old K6 ran way to hot.. caused so many probs, plus the mobo's were utter shit. Nevertheless... it was still a computer, heh.

What was your old system like ?
Which one? The one that made me swear I would never buy AMD was an old K62 400. It was my first system. My current system until I get my Athlon, is a PIII600e @ 864 (it'll do 900 but my hardrives can't hang at that high of a PCI speed) on a soyo bx chipset mobo. Extremely stable.Originally posted by Particle Man

I just talked to the guy I am getting the mobo from and it is rev 1.3 and he is doing a voltage mod on it so I can raise the cpu voltage to 2.1V
