View Full Version : Who could've seen that coming? PSP sales...
Sony's PSP is once again enjoying the top spot in the Japanese Media Create hardware sales charts, scoring about 67,452 units sold and managed to reach a big milestone: a 2 million sales mark.

I wonder what marked the big turnaround for the PSP. Either everybody and their granny already has a DS or people are finally catching on to the awesomeness that is bilinear filtering ;)
a list:
PSP 67,452
DS Lite 56,968
Wii 41,024
PS3 10,692
PS2 9,291
Xbox 360 4,941
 @ more PS2's sold in Japan this week than Xbox360s...

Like the Japanese knows what they're doing?
Seems to me they have their shit more together than anyone in Europe or the US...
Did you know the average annual delay on the bullet train is less than 30 seconds? In Belgium you have to be happy if a train is only 5 minutes late...

That's like me touting about my sidekick. "Hey! Here's a phone that can do internet!"... everyone asks why you'd want that on a phone.
10 years later, everyone has internet on their phones.
I believe I was one of the first PSP owners too. hee!
Come on. DS sales numbers had to start slowing down eventually.
HOWEVER, consider the worldwide sales... and I betcha the DS still outdid it.
Additionally, was there any major releases in Japan for the PSP last month? Some popular Japaneses franchise? That also might have pushed sales.
It's been number one for a while now, so it's not because of 1 game in particular. There are 2 PSP games in the top 5 however (number 1 is a DS game btw), but neither will make it out of Japan, I think.

To put things in perspective however, the DS and DS Lite have apparently sold around 77 million units worldwide so far, while the PSP is stuck at about half that number.
EDIT: And the PS3 selling only 1400 units more than the PS2 has got to be more damning than the PS2 beating the 360. I mean, this is Japan we're talking about - the 360 was always at the bottom of the list there, as was the original Xbox.
i guess billinear filtering has been tired out:
The DS is top of the chart, just, hitting 60,000 units versus the PSPs 58,000.
Third is the Wii with 38,000 followed by the Xbox 360 just shy of 25,000. That's quite a result for Microsoft given that the console frequently fails to top 5,000 in a typical week.
Fourth is the PS3 with just under 10,000, just ahead of the PS2 which has 8,000.

I'm more amazed by the 360's sudden frog leap over both the PS2 and PS3 than the DS taking the top spot again, although things'll probably be back to normal again next week.
ya but apparantly Vesperia launched this week, which is an exclusive RPG by Namco for the 360. Like you said it will probably be back to normal next week, or the week after. I don't think the 360 can sustain those numbers.
Buying a console especially to play a single game that just came out :dunno:
I guess I'm not that much into gaming... ...although I have been wondering if it's time to replace my oldest computer because GTA 4 PC has been announced for october or november... I don't think this box will cut it. It ran San Andreas, barely...

it happens often. I think i've heard quite a few people on this board say "I will buy console XYZ when game ABC comes out" People don't buy it just for that game, but they base their purchase on when that game is going to come out.
Eitherway it has been well documented that console sales are easily influenced by big game releases.
But for the Japanese it has to be a bigger step to actually get that American-u console-u...
