Why on earth did i not know how awesome this game was?? Why did nobody tell me? I've been playing it for about 2-3 hours straight and i'm loving it. especially the sim portion of the game.

I enjoyed it, but the sim experience was a little thin. A similar game that I enjoyed much more was Soul Blazer. You interacted with NPCs in your developing "town" and the action sequences were top down explorer style.

Ignorance is no excuse.. you only have yourself to blame for not knowing Actraiser's awesomeness. :D ;)
The sequel didn't live up to the original. It had great graphics, but the gameplay was difficult (combined with fast-moving enemies) and they removed the simulation aspect of the game.
Despite it (the sim part) being "thin".. sim-type games were very new and simple at that time, especially on consoles. No biggie.. it wasn't the main aspect of the game anyways, just a short & pleasant diversion and still fun (at the time).

I'm a dingus sometimes. I remember Actraiser and Soul Blazer clearly being similar, but never realized they were in fact both Enix titles.

Actraiser was one of the 1st SNES games.. it may have been a launch title, i think. Soul Blazer could almost be considered one of its sequels, though not officially (and for good reason, since it's essentially in a different genre than the main part of Actraiser 1).
From this, you can see that Soul Blazer had 2 unofficial sequels of its own. I didn't know about these games either until reading this.

With Actraiser 2, they took the 2D side-scrolling action from Actraiser 1 and tried to improve it (which I guess they did regarding the graphics and speeding up the gameplay, but they also made a game that's very difficult & frustrating). But it's worth checking out if you're really into 2D SNES platformers and up for a serious challenge.

I loved ActRaiser! It was one of the games that surprised me as an SNES owner - I didn't like SIM games, RPG's, etc... but the game had a great balance and was immensely fun!
