I'm super excited about this game. I preordered from Gamestop so I could get the extra case (though I didn't know about the Wal-mart one).
So it's a fast talking high trousers GTA?
Cotmweasel and I are picking it up at midnight tonight, I'm really looking forward to it (and The Witcher 2 which unlocks at midnight as well).

How are the mechanics, similar to GTAIV?
So it's a fast talking high trousers GTA?
Actually, it feels more like Heavy Rain, with sandbox elements. The focus on driving around town is minimalistic, and you actually have the option to skip the long driving segments if you'd like to just work on the cases and detective work. If Mafia II would have had this option, the game probably would have been 5 hours long instead of 20, haha (note: I haven't finished Mafia II, just making a joke).
I've actually been skipping the driving segments, cause I have a tendency of running over pedestrians and causing a lot of property damage when I drive. However, skipping these segments means you miss out on answering random dispatch calls for various events around the city. I was driving along once and a call for a masked gunman came over dispatch, and it was right next to me, so I stopped to take the guy down.
I think I'm gonna pass. I really don't like the period it's set in. Don't like it in movies either...

I will say that the 40's hairstyles on the women make most of them rather unattractive. I don't think I've seen an attractive girl in the game yet, cause they all have butch styled haircuts cause it was the thing in that era.
Wow, I didn't even know you could skip the driving sequences (not that they are that long...) but in my first interrogation as I was on my way there I ran over 3 people and screwed my rank up!:mecry:

I think I may have ran over 1 person, but I was towards the end of a case and didn't want to restart the entire thing. I looked in the Statistics page to see if there was a "Innocents killed:" counter or something, and I couldn't find one. Hopefully I didn't hurt my rank at all.. does it reset each case?

She has her hair down (and it looks good), whereas I haven't seen a single woman (a living one anyway) whose hair wasn't done up in some awful hairstyle.

Rockstar are saying that it's the new update's fault for PS3.

And their excuse for the 360 is....???
Here is a decent article about the L.A. Noire lock ups and freezing issues:
http://videogamewriters.com/la-noire-the-freezing-the-blame-and-the-workaround-10886
Apparently Rockstar blamed the latest PS3 firmware 3.61 until they got a pile of 360 complaints about the same thing. They've changed their statement to give a short FAQ on how to workaround the problem, tho I'm not sure what it could do.
1.Delete L.A. Noire Game Data (not save data) from the PS3 Game Data Utility. On Xbox 360, clear the cache (My Xbox, System Settings, Device Options, Clear System Cache).
2.Create a temporary PS3 profile to ensure new save files are created. On Xbox 360, create a Silver Xbox Live Gamertag.
3.Launch L.A. Noire and try again. Try playing while signed out of PSN.
4.Check L.A. Noire disc for scratches, dust, dirt or other damage. Clean if necessary.
5.Check other game-discs on your PS3 or Xbox 360 to test whether it’s L.A. Noire or the console playing up.
6.Try your L.A. Noire disc in a different console
#6 makes me laugh, say what? You mean put my PS3 version of the game in my 360 and see if that works? Most people don't have 2 PS3s sitting at home, and even if they did, wouldn't you already be using the best one?
Maybe I'm in the clear, cause I played for maybe 3 and a half hours Tuesday night without problems. I do have a slim PS3 now, which doesn't seem to be having the issue like the older fat model PS3s.

Most of these "FAQ" suggestions seem like time sinks for no reason whatsoever. Delete your game data on the PS3? That's fine and dandy, so the next time you start the game you have to wait another 15 minutes for it to reinstall the game?

I have two PS3's.
It was cheaper than buying another stand alone BR player... so I figured WTH... why not?

Nope, because the 40GB brick is mine, the new slim is my Girlfriend's. Haha!

When the PS3 came out, it was $600 and most blu ray players were $1000. I think Sony did this to drive PS3 sales, and it worked.
Yeah nowadays you can get a Blu ray player for $80-$150 it seems, and the PS3 is $300.
Well I got my second one- the PS3 slim model with 250 gig HD and Move with a game for $50 bucks off of one of the crack heads from my girlfriends work. I almost felt guilty, but the guy was probably just going to use it to get high and who knows it may be stolen anyway.

They did it to 'back door' BluRay into your living room... and they lose money on every unit sold.
Yeah, but they make it up in game sales and accessories. The Xbox is the same way, it was being sold at a loss for awhile too. This isn't really uncommon to see consoles sold at a loss when first released. Only Ninkiddytendhaha was selling their consoles this generation at a profit.
I just finished L.A. Noire last night...... man what an incredibly ending. I wasn't sure if the game's story would get deeper, but it certainly does towards the last part of the game. It's quite intense, with a really deep storyline.
Now if only the PSN store would come back so I can play my 2 DLC packs.

All 21 cases & 40 side missions?
I got upto 'Fallen Idol' and started fucking up; probably because it was four in the morning and my eyes were glazing over...
Loving it so far"! :bigthumb:
I just finished the 21 cases. I only have 5 of the "street crime" missions complete, and only 19 or the 95 cars to collect. I also have 0 of the Golden Film reels, so there's still a lot of extra stuff I could do.
Gonna wait til the DLC comes out on Tuesday (read: when the PSN is back up hopefully) to put a few more hours into it.

I did quite a few side missions in my first session; seven or eight... got a couple of suits unlocked for my troubles. :bigthumb:
I got the 'Naked City' and 'Badge Persuit' DLC; the Badge Persuit negatives are a gorgeous little touch... I need to go round to a mates and hook up to XBL later today. :bigthumb:

And a good thing they did because they sure as hell didn't make a lot of money on the games. I seem to remember a graph that said on average only like 2.5 games/console were sold, as opposed to 10+ for Xbox/PS3...

Sounds about right.
Plug in Wii and turn it on.
WTF is wrong with this thing, the graphics are terrible
Post on Slackercentral, some RETARDS suggest getting the component cables
Plug component cables in, STILL LOOKS LIKE SHIT CAPTAIN
Buy 2 games to justify buying that POS, also realise that the motion sensing is a bit delayed and not very accurate... End up letting my Mum take it so she can use Wii Fit, never get it back, never want it back.

That's pretty much how I think. But your quote got me thinking today....
Over here at least, Private Eye and campy crime history pieces ala Sam Spade are all but dead... People say they don't really like them... I know I don't. If you think about it though, they have just taken a new face with stuff like CSI and other crime dramas. The tough guy mentality is still there in all it's glory with people like David Caruso.
I'm surprised this game is appearing popular.

I'm not surprised by it at all. Just look at how popular all the rap shit is, that's just a continuation of the same strain that's been running through American pop culture at least since Jesse James was idolized by the masses.

I didn't see this game announced and straight-away think "Holy fuck, a 1940's Cop Game, great!"... I thought "Holy fuck, a 1940's Cop Game FROM ROCKSTAR, great!". That's the primary appeal for me... I'm not a huge "Cowboy" fan but I bought Red Dead Redemption at launch too... IMO they're one of the few brands you can actually 'trust' to an extent.

well, besides GTA4 being a horrible mess of horribleness. Red Dead was alright, from the little bit I played during a rental, but it didn't grab me as something I needed to own.
L.A. Noire really is the best game they've made in a while (IMHO). The writing is fantastic, the graphics are amazing, the gameplay is solid, and the attention to detail is awesome.

I loved/still love IV; true it's not as great as San Andreas but I still play it pretty regularly.
well, besides GTA4 being a horrible mess of horribleness.
Say whaaat?
Say whaaat?
The game was just bad IMHO. The driving was incredibly tedious with horrible controls, the missions weren't very interesting, and the interrupt missions where you had to play billiards with friends were infuriating. I expected more out of the game, and even bought the huge special edition one that came with the locker.
Saints Row 2 was better in every possible way.
I think the driving is ace. Best (most realistic) driving physics in a GTA game to date. First time I played the game, I spent most of my time driving a Dukes (dukes of hazard-like musclecar) just because you could whip it around corners just like in the movies. The racing, which were always the hardest fucking missions in previous GTA games, are now walks in the park because the cars behave so predictably...
I'm playing it a second time and ignoring my (girl)friends almost completely. You get a thumbs down, but that's about all that happens.
so whats the verdict? yay or nay? i may gamefly it , but it looks meh tbh...

L.A. Noire is one of the best games of the year, and I have a feeling it'll win a couple of Game of the Year awards.
Definitely rent it.

I wish that you could pull out your gun at any point but apart from that, no gripes here.
So far I've managed to get through without hurting/running anybody over... it's made for some hair-raising diversions through traffic I'll tell you.
I was tootling around during my first session and actually smiled with joy at the overall ambience of the thing.
I'm trying to remember the last time any developer published a detective game, and outside of Blade Runner and Tex Murphy I'm coming up empty. I think it's time the genre was given an update, but I'm going to let some months pass before I buy this one.

A little L.A. Noire humor...
Loading Complete: L.A. No Idea
I just beat L.A. Noire last night.
I thought it was a brilliant game, and definitely deserved more than a B+ on Metacritic. People were probably expecting another game like GTA, and L.A. Noire is not that at all.
There aren't many games that make you truly care about the story and characters, but this one does that. Probably because it's actually the real actors faces that you see in the game, with very genuine acting and expressions. The guy who played the Steward in LOTR:ROTK was in it, too. overall, it was like watching/playing a very dark detective thriller. The 40's setting is done brilliantly, as well.
Aye, I really liked the acting and story telling of the game. I felt a bit powerless towards the mid-end parts, which kind of bugged me, but I suppose it was necessary to keep the story flowing.

I know what you mean, like what happens at the end of the narcotics desk, I was like "WTF what's gonna happen now??" When he went into Elsa's apartment after interrogating her, I remember also thinking "Wait, isn't Cole married, and doesn't he have 2 kids?"
Then the ending, I actually felt sad about what happened.
I'm watching Idiocracy right now. During the beginning, it shows this couple named Carol and Trevor... I noticed "Trevor" is the same guy who played Mickey Cohen in L.A. Noire.
I also recognized these people in the game:
Carla Gallo (HBO series Carnivale)
John Noble (Steward in ROTK)
Courtney Gains (Back to the Future, The Burbs, Wing Commander III)
Eric Nenninger (Eric from Malcolm in the Middle)
Scott MacDonald (also Carnivale)
There were others I recognized, but couldn't remember where I had seen them.
