Neon Genesis Evangelion is awesome... although it gets very weird in the end.
Akira and Ghost in the Shell are must-see classics.
But my personal fav is Record of Lodoss War. Great story, great characters and great animation.
Have fun!!

I couldnt watch much, my fav "tv" series is Dragon Ball, (i said this in the cooler, not Z and NOT GT!!, just plain old DB)...

Then one i really, really liked was "My friend Totoro" and "Porco Rosso" (i think those are the names), its from the same people that made Mononoke... I only saw them once in HBO, a long time go (when HBO was free here :()

I'm talking about the original ending to the TV series. The one that takes place in Shinji's mind. I thought that was amazing, but most other people I talked to thought it was terrible.

If I had to pick a favorite anime series, it would be Cowboy Bebop. I have not seen that many Japanese anime series. I have seen a few episodes of Vampire Princess Miyu (English subtitles).
A long time ago, I use to think Cartoon Network was for small kids until I saw some good series. The only thing I watch is Adult Swim (the one on Saturday). There are some good series in those.
edit: Took off Toonami & Midnight Run because they suck.
Ok, here's my .02
In order of preference
Akira (of course)
Perfect Blue
Ninja Scroll
Princess Mononoke
Robotech The Series
Spawn Animated Series (not really Anime, but what the heck)
Vimpire Hunter D (the original, havent seen the new one yet)

EVA is the most *significant* anime ever made.
I have to add Oh my goddess (ah megami sama) to my list of favorites. i had not seen the end of the TV series until i bought it on DVD. Just incredible :). I'll give a full review and screenshots in a new post, just thought i'd mention it here.

I Like all anime that comes out, but i'm a animefreak everyone as there good and bad points to them. like samurai pizza cats rocks, because it's funny, ninja scoll, because it's bloodly so i like everyone. trigun is a must watch.
i pretty much agree with that. I like most all anime except Dragonball Z (i haven't seen Dragon Ball so i dont know if that's any good) and a few choice others that i cant even think of at the moment. For the most part my favorite types are romantic comedies, Ranma, Kimagure Orange Road, Love Hina, Kenshin (kind of).

I liked the Neon Genesis Evangelion series a hole lot except for the last movie was a bit weird and disapointed me a bit. On tv dbz is really good cept for all the re-runs and gundam wing is good but overall NGE is my favorite probably along with Fatal Fury movies. I haven't watched much anime recently though accept for some toonami.

What "end" are you refering to with Evangelion?
I'm not positive since im not an eva expert but i believe there are 3 endings. One being the 13th tape (if you got the VHS) or the last episode in the series. The other two endings are Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion.
End of Evangelion is just awesome, some crazy awesome anime :)
Whatever ending had the characters sitting in chairs was just weird tho :(

I'm thinking of End of Eva i think. 13th episode was where they were in chairs i believe but havent seen em in while. Whatever one where Rea or whatever the blue hair girls name was got really big and didnt have clothes on is one im talking bout i mean it didnt show anything but that is the weird one plus i was fast forwarding it cus I was watching it while my mom and sis was in room cus I had to watch it cus it was due back that day and I had to fast forward it cus of that part but it just disappointed me.

Makes you wonder if some little schoolgirl is going to appear around the corner and turn you into yellow slush.
I still think Trigun is cooler though but it missed out a big part of the still running manga (nicholas wolfwood and legato bluesumers never die that's all made up filler).
I actually cried the first time i saw wollfwood bite the dust it was so sad; luckily nobody was around while i balled my eyes out.

I did... and I know what you mean, kinda frustrating that no one else appreciated the last part. I mostly enjoyed it cause I identified with it a lot at the time... thank god I'm less of a freak now ;)
Though for action, End of Eva is much better :) very nicely done, you have to think about how creative a mind you have to have to come up with all that. Well, either that or he was on something ^_^
and Gibb, there are only two endings. The 25th and 26th episodes is one, and End of Eva is the other. Death and Rebirth is just a recap of the episodes... kinda crappy actually.
I'd have to say Evangelion, Furikuri, and Cowboy Bebop are my favorite anime. I've seen Berserk, and it's pretty cool... wouldn't really consider it a fav though.
ah, so is death and rebirth the thing iw as talkin about? where the people are just sitting around in chairs talkin. I really hated that thing lol

I know I am a little late regarding talking about Berserk, but what the hell. I actually decided to look to see if there were DVD's for the U.S. and found that the first DVD for the series comes out 05/28/02. I also decided to see if I could find more sites on Berserk but they were gone. The only one still left was the one RAnta gave http://www.physics.scsu.edu/~jobien/berserk/index.html. I used www.animespider.com to find Berserk sites. I did not feel like sifting through all the crap regular search engins give. I am not sure if this series is something I would even like. I mostly like modern day or future settings in anime. I also like anime when based on ancient Japan.

Macross Plus: Top Gun on Anime (a definite must-have)

All I know about devilman is the stupid clip from the manga promo music video on all Manga DVDs, man that company must be hurting for shows, cause all they have is crap. Though that show with the cop having granades in his crotch seems mildly interesting if not dated.
I saw some devilman movie a long time ago?
one where he's fighting that demon bird chick right?

Hmmm yeah i heard somebody about the horrendous censorship of Tenchi just recently. It is stupid that everything on tv is censored beyond believe in the states. In most european countries there isn't censorship for tv programs and you dont see a bunch of messed up children because of it. If anything censorship just turns kids into perverted freaks like myself :)
Sometimes censorship is fun tho. I never did see it but Mallrats was played on Network television a while back and it was supposedly pretty hilarious. The replaced phrases like "All it took was a fat chronic blunt!" with "All it took was a fat karate punch!".

Akira is a must-see: a truly legendary anime. Whether you are into japanimation or not, this is an all-time classic on par with Ran or The Seven Samurai.
GITS and Ninja Scroll are superb, as well. But IMHO they are just above the average anime. Now, those have one advantage over other anime movies: they are a one-shot picture. Gundam Wing, Bubblegum Crisis, Evangelion, Lodoss War, etc... are all several tapes or DVDs long. And sometimes it's had to find them all.
yeah, like anthaus said those 3 are very popular because they require little effort or money to watch. Series are incredibly long and rather expensive.
Personally i dont like Akira, GITS or Ninja scroll as much as i absolutely love Kimagure Orange Road, Love Hina, or Rurouni Kenshin. The Kenshin OVAs (or OAV, i can never remember which is it) are imo MUCH, MUCH better than those 3 movies. I really liked GITS and Akira but i just love the length of the series. You really start to fall in love with characters after seeing them for so long. Kyosuke, Madoka, Naru, Keitaro, Ryoga, and Hikaru are so much more involved then Tetsuo or any of those guys from the short movies. I dont even remember the names of guys in Ninja Scroll cept maybe Jubei?
i should also mention that Princess mononoke is very popular as well, it's just one movie so it requires little investment to watch. Dont let the name fool you tho, it's not like sailor moon. It's hardcore ass kickin anime at it's best. It's about a guy who gets a rare disease that will consume his entire body if he dosen't find the cure. He is expelled from his village and goes off in search of a cure. It's a badass movie, definately one of my favs. I also liked Green Legend Ran alot (a single movie).
Big O was a good series. Pilot Canidate is also pretty cool
CrashNBurN
05-07-02, 06:56 AM
Ahhhh, so basically one-hit-wonders are the best movies? Since you don't have to watch actually the whole series to understand what's going on? I personally haven't seen very many anime except those 3 I listed and of course DBZ. I'm trying to find others that I can watch and really get into, but I don't know what kind of anime I would like or to look for, please help a sad individual. :)
Hmm Gibb boy am I generally correct if I say that you generally like comedies and romantic stuff above action/horror manga?
If so it might be nice with another rewiever who likes those types of films to complement your reviews.

I like everything really but you're right, i like the romantic comedies above everything else. Kimagure Orange road has it's own little fan base, nothing as big as kenshin or what not but it's still my fav series. Love Hina is very popular tho, a couple of my best friends love Love Hina.

I love the rip'em, shoot'em, and martial arts in anime's or just a lot of violence! What movies you guys recommend I go out and rent? Getting some tonight hopefully, only have to be at work at 6am so I got some time tonight to watch some anime's!
hmmmm well depends on where you're renting from.
Places like blockbuster wont have too much but you can probably find stuff like this there:
Princess Mononoke
Akira
Ghost in the Shell (maybe)
Demon city Shinjuku (maybe)
Vampire Hunter D
Ninja Scroll
If you can find these, try to:
Samurai X: Trust
Samurai X: Betrayal
these two videos/dvds are the 4 OAV(OVA)s for the Rurouni Kenshin series. According to some people you are supposed to watch them after you've watched the TV series cause that's how they came out in japan. However, i watched em before i watched the TV series and it's what made me fall in love with the Kenshin series.
As far as violent series (well they cant have 100% violence but these are more action oriented then romantic)
Bubble Gum Crisis 2040 (Futuristic Robot combat type stuff)
Arc the Lad (sort of recent past timeframe, fighting with swords and elemental powers tho)
Rurouni Kenshin (feudal japan type era)
3x3 Eyes (immortals vs demons and such)

The most violent anime I've ever seen (I couldn't stand it, BTW) is Fist of the North Star. Extreme Graphic Violence taken to a senseless point. I'm not saying this as a recommendation, but as a warning.
lol i forgot about that one
i saw part of some episode along time ago. The story was kind of interesting but i didn't care for the animation style or excessive violence. There is one scene where a guy is just walkin around pointing his hand at enemies and their heads or whatever swell up and up and pop with all the brain matter, eyes and stuff flyin all over the place.
I forgot to mention Cowboy Bebop, not really violent but one of the most awesome series there are, has action and some violence, viewer discretion is advised :)
i have only seen one anime - it was Ninja Scrolls and i liked it. Any other good animes like ninja scrolls anyone could recommed?

Samurai X Trust
Samurai X Betrayal
The story is about a child named Shinta who witnesses the death of his care takers at the hands of some slave traders. He is rescued by a samurai who teaches him the deathly sword techniques of Hiten Mitsurugi. He then becomes an assassin.
It's 2 hours long, 4 separate episodes. MUST SEE :)
In fact if i had money i would buy these two DVDs. It's probably one of my favorite short series ever but i dont own it :(
i forgot to mention the Samurai X movie
"Samurai X The Motion Picture" is based off of the Rurouni Kenshin TV series as is nothing like the Kenshin OVAs (which is what Samurai X Trust and Betrayal are)
The Samurai X Motion Picture isn't very good imo, not godly awesome like Trust and Betrayal, the animation style is completely different too. Kenshin looks awesome in the OVAs but looks kind of goofy in the Motion Picture and the TV series.

Forgot to add a long time ago that they also shorten the series on cable because most of the episodes last 28 minutes or so. A couple of episodes last like 40 minutes. They take out whole scenes because either to shorten the episode or because it has a lot of sexual situations.

Another thing I hate that they did to Tenchi Muyo! is that they use the intro for the end of the show also. They also use the same intro for the last 6 episodes. The first 7 in the series has the intro that is on CN, but the last 6 episodes have a totally different intro. They also have different end credits.
About Fist of the North Star, IT HAS REALLY BAD ACTING !!!!!
