runing winme and my system resources were at about 52%
shocking
WinME (shudder). I was one of the people who didn't have a good WinME experience so for me I never liked it. I am very happy with XP for right now.

Whats your longest uptime
BTW is there a program that times how long your system has been on, and writes it to a text file, say, very ten minutes?

Our apartment server has been on since....
Nov. 11, 6:44 p.m.
I'm afraid to turn it off because last time the hard drive took 45 minutes to load windows 2000, while making pained grinding noises. It has a big sign on it that says "Don't touch or I'll die". I'm surprised the CS server hasn't crashed it yet...

just use XP.. I have had mine running for about 3 weeks at most, without NEEDING a reboot, but just rebooting anyway..
thats running for weeks, and installing OfficeXP, driver updates for my netcard, http server, mail server and still using it for playing games all the time, without rebooting :) :)

"technically" i didn't "need" to reboot, i just errrrrr did, due to winme's stability :D
i would have WinXP, apart from the fact that i don't like the incompatibility i have found with games. And i don't have $400 or whatever for the pro version.
Sure, i have it cracked, but what happens when SP 1 comes out?

If your running any kind of server and can run it Linux as well as Windows of any kind, if you possibly can, pick Linux, no comparison, IMO. My web, dns and mail servers have been up over a year, only going down due to an occasional move to another room or power outage. Been up now for 6 months or more.
I only run a 2000 Server because my web guy does Cold Fusion for a couple sites, but we're looking heavily into this open source equivelant, can't remember the name of it right now though.
As for game server, no comparson again, IMO. Had a TFC server up for 8 months, added and uninstalled a UT server during that time, added and removed Admin Mod a couple times, ran it as a DNS server for a bit, too.

well i DO have linux mandrake 8.1 on CD.
does it have something equivelent to internet connection sharing or sygate cos i had a thought about making it a internet thingy, but got no idea how to go about it. In windows it would just be turn on internet connextion sharing

You don't need Pro unless you need all the specific networking and administration crap that it comes with. Look around on line and see if you can get an OEM version for around $150, a lot of places sell them with old MoBo's to get around the technicality of being sold with a new system. Try Atomic Park (http://atomicpark.com/), we had to get 2000 Server quick for a client and ordered it and they sent it with a 386 MoBo :D Huge @ss box and we wondered what the hell was in it, this massive 386 AT MoBo LoL :D

I had this little 15 year old Linux whiz freak customer set up an old 486 as a router to split off his Dads cable connection, it worked, was a pain in the ass, and they wound up buying a router from me. A hardware router/switch solution is realy the best and easiest for connection sharing, especialy since I'm lazy :D

I've had my XP system here up for over a week with no problems. I use my system a lot, too. Running all kinds of apps. From shoppe'ing people in the board, to playing WC3, SS, Q3A, UT, KaZaA, WinMX, ACDSee, Word, and others. The only reason I had to reboot was because of Windows Update.

Mac OS Server is a pretty stable server platform, more so then any Microsoft, and hardly no one would know how to hack into it :D
OS X is built on top of Unix, and is hella stable, and again, probably no one knows how to hack into it :D.
OS X Server is going to be sweet, imagine it on a dual G4 1 GHz, would freakin' fly.
[edit]
OS X also has Apache built into it, along with a number of coding and debugging apps.
router......WORD
I am thoinking about a Cisco Router as a Student I can get a $800.00 router for $250.00
I have a Linksys right now and it rox.............
