I don't think mine did. You wouldn't want to use it anyway. Get some good Arctic Silver.

k, gonna find a local vendor that sells arctic silver. any tips for applying the stuff? i know that theres only a small area on the athlon chips that makes contact with the heat sink, should i get one of those copper plates to stick between the cpu and the sink?

I've never used a shim, and never had a problem.

As far as applying the goop, I just squirt a tiny bit of it on my finger and rub it on the core. Once the core is completely covered, you're done.

cool, thanks for the tip. any other athlonxp advice you think a newbie might need to know would be gladly appreciated.

Nothing much...Just make sure you have good ventilation in your PC, and enjoy your new, faster ride. :)

The boxed version comes with a thermal pad attached to the bottom of the heatsink.. It works nicely for me, no need to buy any extra thermal stuff.

I think we've already determined the value of your suggestions, eh Blighter?

Clean off the thermal pad with some good alchohol and make sure the surface is very clean then smooth the paste on with a credit card so it is nice and even. Remember the atlons run hot so anthing you can do to drop the temp in your case is a good thing. No need for the shim. Be very careful when mounting the heatsink do not over tighten it!Originally posted by Blighter

What kind of case would be best for this new setup? The parts are due to arrive tomorrow, and I'm still pretty much in the dark on the case/power supply options.

An Antec 400W power supply should do you quite well, and they're not very expensive.

Choosing a case basically comes down to how much you want to spend. I've got an Evercase I bought from newegg that I'm quite happy with for ~$40. You can get nice Aluminum cases for anywhere from $120-$300+.

PS...don't listen to whatever Blighter says :P

Did you remember to get the ultimate V5?

me_2

Got a V5, it currently resides in my secondary computer.

be sure to put the slower radeon 8500 of GF4 in the secondary PC. THE V5 IS THE ULTIMATE!!!

btw, I'm just kidding

Get an Inwin then........ this (http://www.in-win.com.tw/home/detail.php?show=features&event=ATX&class=Mid_Tower&type=A-Series&model=IW-A500) is a great case even on the under $50 model or pay about $10 more & get this (http://www.in-win.com.tw/home/detail.php?show=features&event=ATX&class=Mid_Tower&type=S-Series&model=IW-S508) one!!! It has a 90mm exaust fan!!! And it's excellent for keeping Athlons cool. I have that one and my CPU never gets any higher than 44C fully loaded :D :D :D

Edited: It comes with a UL rated, AMD & P4 approved 300W PSU and it kicks ass!!! or plan on spending a bit more for a better PSU from Enermax.........
