Before i start this review, i should start with my history with Devil Hunter Yohko. Along time ago i saw what i believed was the very first episode in the series. A few months ago i rented the first VHS tape and watched it with a friend. I was telling him how cool the first episode was and we started to watch it. It didnt take long to realize that what i saw was NOT the first episode in the series. What i had originally scene was the 2nd episode.

This series starts off very, very badly. The first episode is rather pornographic and rather terrible. Nudity is overly gratuitous and makes the series look very cheap, like a hentai series.

Anyway then the second episode comes along. If you completely skip the first episode and start with episode 2, you wont miss much of anything. I have both of the DVD collections and they have Episodes 1-3 and 5-6. (yes episode 4 is missing and i'll go into that later).

Story: 6/10

Yohko Mano is a 16 year old high school student. Demons attack her and she is forced to defend herself. Her Grandmother later tells her that she is the 108th generation of Devil Hunter. When the Devil Hunters come of age, they have to take the roll of Devil Hunter and protect the world from various evil demons. It pretty much says all of this at the beginning of episode 2 so it's no problem to just skip episode 1.

Animation: 7/10

The animation in DHY is very old. The first one came out in 1991 i believe and it shows. The improvement in animation from episode 1 to 2 is huge. Character designs from Episode 2 and on are very cool.

Sound/Dubbing: 8/10

The sound is beefed up with Dolby Digital so it sounds very good. The english dubbing is well done and rather tolerable.

Music: 8/10

There is some really cool music in the series, plus the dvd collections have alot of music videos on them.

Extras: 9/10

The extras are quite awesome on the 2nd collection. The first collection has some concept art, trailers, and a music video. The 2nd collection has a nifty ADV catalog dvd with lots of cool stuff on it. It has the entire first episode of Excel saga and a 10 minute clip of the first episode of Steel Angel Kurumi. It also has around 35 trailers from lots of ADV licensed series.

Overall: 8/10

For 17.99 each (at Best Buy) these 2 dvd collections are definately worth getting. My only complaints are the first episode, and the missing 4th episode. The first dvd collection contains these episodes:
DHY 1 Normal (Sub or Dub)
DHY 1 Special Extended Version (Dubbed only)
DHY 2 (Sub or Dub)
DHY 3 (Sub or Dub)

The second collection contains these:
DHY 5 (sub or dub)
DHY 6 (sub or dub)
DHY 4-Ever!

I assumed that the "4-Ever" was the 4th episode in the series, but it isnt... "4-Ever" is simply 8 music videos grouped together under the name 4-Ever. There is no new storylines or new animation used at all in these videos. (well 2 of the music videos are live action videos of the people who sing the songs, but nothing too interesting)

So basically the series does not have a 4th episode, and the first episode is hentai. Other than that the series is really cool and definately worth checking out.

Why does this remind me of La Blue Girl? LOL!

Note: I am not a fan of hentai, but I have seen La Blue Girl. La Blue Girl is seriously f@#ked up, as is all hentai.

I have heard and seen this title in best buy and sam goody, but I was unsure if it was a good anime. I may have to check this out now.

Thanks for the good review Gibb!

You know you like it ;)

And yes i feel that Devil Hunter Yohko is a decent legitimate anime, not some sleezy hentai type anime. It's not as mature as Sakura Diaries and SD is not hentai.

I DO NOT LIKE HENTAI!!!!! I don't mind if there is brief nudity in anime, but having anime characters having 53x is weird. If I wanna watch 53x, it will be real pr0n. I have not seen Sakura Diaries, so I will not judge that one.

BTW, I know you are playin'.

Good ol' cool devices. An anime series based off of one of my worst hated things in real life, S&M and weird body piercings. I think i'll pass on that one. The only hentai series i wanted to see was Wordsworth and somebody reviewed it on this forum sayin it wasnt very good.

Sakura Diaries was very good except i felt it REALLY needs more developement. It needs another 4-5 episodes to be complete. It left me wanting more, much more.
