Downloaded, installed. Don't see any difference whatsoever.

Thanks MS

What were you expecting Apoch? Not being sarcastic just wondering. Did you try to see if you could uninstall previously integrated stuff?.. i.e. messenger or IE. I think a lot of the fixes were security and compatibility related. No DX9, etc. (?)

No DX9?

Edit: Ah, I see. :)

Well, I thought for awhile that it would be a component of SP1... but it doesn't look to be the case. I haven't followed SP1 much because I don't see a reason to install it. Plus, 56k suxors :(

I've been running dx9 since the beginning of the month, Mike.

What did I expect? A few more options here or there... that's all.

the biggest fix is, of course, the ability to remove all the "unremovable" crap that microsoft installs. (i.e, messenger, outlook, etc.etc.)

that, and all the previous patches and fixes come in one tidy package.

So is this SP1 identical to the final that will be released by MS next week? With no nag screens or version watermarks on the desktop?

Hold up a new 5 dollar bill to a light. You will see a watermarked image of the president next to the threaded image.

Watermarks = the version and Windows information stamped on the desktop = annoying, and usually associated with BETA Windows operating systems.

Well, everything installed fine, no errors at all and no beta warnings or watermarks. Only issue I had that I couldnt resolve was replacing the original explorer.exe with the explorer.exe I hex edited for this SP1 to remove the "START" word and flag from the start button. Seems no matter what I do to rename the original then paste the new, the original pops back into place upon booting into the desktop.

I may have to disable Windows file protection to do this, but safemode was the way i did it before. At least the hacked uxtheme.dll that came with the pack works.

Oh yeh, I get an average of 5 fps boost in Quake3.
Havent tried any other games yet, but so far so good. :)

Any guesses as to why? I'm glad it's working out for you. :)

Honestly no idea whatsoever, LOL!
On top of Quake3 gaining an extra 5 fps in demo four, Serious Sam2 has jumped up a few fps than before. A little history on this area:
Pre-30+ drivers in XP I would average 8-12 fps with no AA or aniso.
Along came 30.30 and 30.82 which pushed the limit to 36 fps with 4x aa and 8x aniso.
Now with the 31.00 drivers and SP1, its roughly 53-54 fps.
No too bad with 4x antialiasing and maxed texture detail.

Far as I know it doesn't really "remove" it, but just get's it out of your way.

I'm waiting for XPlite so it can actually remove all that crap.

Some sites are having big discussions about this now. I won't link any but it looks like you can get it off M$ download site now too.... which means nothing as they're getting hammered. Expect mirrors to pop up like hotcakes shortly though.
