what's the best graphics card for a linux box

my uncle is gonna build a linux box, and needs to know what would be the best graphics card to choose. I was thinking NVidia, cuz they have the best driver support, and, from what I gather, linux drivers are spotty at best. this will just be a box for fooling around, and doing nothing in particular, so the graphics card doesn't necessarily have to be top of the line, but at least a moderately decent one.

hmm... Well you hear about nVidia having the best driver support, but truth be told, I had a bit of trouble getting my GF4 set up right. My Voodoo5, however, worked great out of the box even in 3d games. So I'd say if you have an old 3dfx card go with that. nVIDIA drivers are great once you get them up and running, but don't expect a perfect out of the box experience.

As for ati, I don't own an Ati card so I couldn't tell you, but I've heard their linux support is less than phenomenal.

I used Mandrake9 with my Radeon8500 using the drivers the O/S installed and games ran at a blistering 3 frames per second! :eek: lol

But I agree with Flux, use an old 3dfx card if you have one, or go with an nvidia card. Or you could look for a cheap PowerVR Kyro/2 I've heard their linux drivers a pretty decent; although I never had the chance to try them out...
