I've just upgraded my HD to a 80Gb / 8Mb cache model very, very fast - and nice and quiet :)

But what really impressed me was the 'Data Lifeguard v10.0' software. The installation and copying of data from the old drive was simply the easiest ever. I know all the manufacturers bascally modifiy the well known 'EZ-Drive' software, but Western Digital really got it right with this version.

Word. I got a 80/8mb myself and am loving it. Though I am using it for Digital Audio processing and not gaming.

I have read several times that the 8MB cache hd's from Western Digital offers better performance than regular 2MB cache ones but only in server applications, regular desktop applications do not benefit much from it, but I also keep hearing people say the opposite, it helps everything, so what is it?,

Believe me, this little monster offers real improvements although it depends on what you are upgrading from. I am very, very, happy but if your current HD is fairly modern your money may be better spent elsewhere.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but having a larger cache only helps if your accessing something that was already accessed and stored in the cache already, right?

I have a 5-year old 1.96GB Seagate, ANYTHING would be an improvement, lol,

I have an 8 meg cache 120g WD, it is a lot faster then my old 40giger but I think its because of the tech behind it and not just the 8 meg cache. I'm no expert on HDs though.

ItIsJustACardCompany: I think there's a bug in your sig, AFAIK, only maxtor has ATA133 harddrives.

120.0 GIG 7200 RPM ATA/133 Western Digital

True, but it's just a marketing gimmick - just like AGP speeds

Not always. Modern HD caches use an algorithim that trys to predict what data will be requested next and loading it directly into the cache ram. So it's like having a 8mb ram disk.

The new 250MB hd's are quite impressive, but it sucks about the hardware limitation above 130GB or so on some systems,

You might want to check and see if WD installed anything else behind your back. Some of their utilities report information about the status of the hard drive back to WD without really telling you about it.

I found out about this when Zone Alarm told me that some WD program was wanting to send info out.

The only program I ran off the floppy disk was a utility to change the ATA spec, and it installed a bunch of other junk to the C: drive without prompting me.

Haven't used the newer version of WD's software. Used to love Maxtors but they made it all funky. Do have to mention Seagates drive softeware, like it a lot.

This new Maxtor HDD looks great (Serial ATA + 8MB cache, only up to 160GB though).

"ItIsJustACardCompany: I think there's a bug in your sig, AFAIK, only maxtor has ATA133 harddrives."

Mine had a sticker on the box that said "ATA-133 ready"

Maybe it's ATA133 ready but you can check the drive's specs on WD's site, it's only a ATA100 drive  (like that matters anyway)
