Do you think this next-gen system will dominate the console wars or will it sink into oblivian like the 3DO and Atai Jaguar??
As much as I hate Microsoft, I must say the system looks pretty impressive. They've already accumulated many of the big software giants. Will the price deter from its success?? We'll see.

Barring a delay, I can't really see the XBox failing at this point. There's just too many good things going for it.

Sink or fail?
Worldwide...fail. It can't hope to grab in Japan so it loses.
Set top box...fail. PS2 doesn't require a remote to operate DVD and CD player so PS2 wins hands down.
Must have games...fail (only at launch). It won't do well to start with but if MS plays the cards right (and buys up most of the gaming industry) it could become the PS2's worst enemy.
Must have console...iffy at this point. The sales will determine this one come October.
Developer list...pass. Plenty of devs on board ensure that we will at least have "some" good quality games outta the bunch of crap we've been getting from those god damn 3rd parties. Most of them are PC developers so I'd have to say this could possibly also be their worst enemy.
Publicity...fail. Not many people know what the heck an X-Box is. Only hardcore PC gamers or internet browsers are looking into this beast right now and so far the results are mixed. MS better use that 500 million well or they lose to PS2 and Gamecube.
Coolness factor...pass with flying colors. X-Box sure does look cool as a console. 2nd to a PS2 I think.
Darkside,
have you played on a real X-box? I have. It is gonna kick the PS2's butt from here to china. The only thing that has any chance of hurting it is acceptance in Japan. If the Japanese don't accept it that would be bad but Konami is already on board as well as many other japanese console power players so I would say that it is very possible that that won't be a problem. And as far as the PS2 is concerned; the dreamcast looks better! The PS2 is too blocky. Trust me the X-box kills in the graphics department.

first of all who gives a crap if it does well in japan. I think it will kick ass. and another point the remote is a nice feature for watching movies and stuff. 2 thumbs up :) :)
First of all there are other countries other than the US, and if it doesn't do well in Japan that would probably kill or at least hurt the prospects for it in the future. The biggest console country is Japan and it is very important to the future of consoles. So actually you should give a crap how it does in Japan. The bigger of a success it is the more it will encourage MS to continue to further the Xbox. Originally posted by czorhanz:

Actually, consoles that have failed in Japan have overall succeeded because they were a success in America. Examples are the N64 and Genesis.
On the other hand, consoles that have succeeded in Japan have failed because they didn't get American acceptance. Examples: Saturn, PC Engine.
Also, America has lead the world in console and software sales for a while now.
I don't want to get into a pissing contest here, but everything I have read indicates otherwise. What I have read could be wrong... but I doubt it. Also Check my profile. Look under occupation. I will be able to tell you soon enough provided I don't have to sign an NDA. Originally posted by nextbillgates:

x-box will fail.
Reason for the failure is that many people don't like Microsoft and it won't be that far ahead of the Ps2 and it won't have the large measure of games that the Ps2 has, Japan won't accept it and the performance difference won't be enough to switch the Ps2 lovers over.

I'm not going to support Microcrap in this endevour. They are strong arming their way into the console gaming industry and I have zero tolerance or respect for that. Microshaft proves time and time again that as long as they have enough money they can buy their way into anything. I hope they get a cold consumer response and they lose all the money they sunk into the PC clone.
Microsuck this poo is for you!

Hmmm? So Microsoft is wrong in making the XBox? Let's see...
The licensing fees are at or around $6, lower than any other next gen console, including the Game Boy Advance. Because it uses DirectX, it has the smoothest learning curve of any next gen console. The controller was designed from advice from gamers and developers. Microsoft also made a smaller controller for the Asian market because they know the size of the American version was a problem. Microsoft has pretty much everything in the box already. Gamecube and PS2 require a large amount of add-ons to match XBox's functionality, and because add-ons don't sell that well, it will never match XBox.
All this for the expected price of $250-300.
So tell me Ambience, what has Microsoft done wrong? Or have they even done anything wrong?

The failures/successes of the mentioned consoles speak for themselves. Also, I found my sales statistics from NPD (I think, it's been a while).

I suppose you didn't read my message at all. I was very clear what was wrong with Microscrub. I hope their console dies a horrible death.

Actually, I've read your message several times, and you're just pulling stuff out of your ass. The only way they've used money to "buy out" the industry was with the purchase of Bungie. Yep, that's strong-arming all right.

And you are a corporate zealot, one of the many who line up at the stores to invest in a liability to make the machine larger and more powerful.
For one to see you only need open your eyes.

Fail, Microsoft just uses their standard strategy and buys any company they want to make games for the X-Box, coupled with the high price, and stuff like the fact that to play DVD's you have to BUY a (Microsoft) remote to "unlock" DVD playback, and using the claim that that way is better because then only users interested in playing DVD's will be able to shows typical Microsoft thinking, then you have the controllers, which are an almost straight rip-off of the Dreamcast controllers, and more, just like the claims they were giving out about the hardware's power and abilities, which, unsurprisingly, dropped down to slightly more "realistic" levels, tho only slightly, the X-Box is nothing more than an overhyped pc, Microsoft just want to take over every aspect of anything electronic, and this is their latest attempt, I will get one, eventually, when the price drops considerably, just like I will get a Playstation 2 when they are available for cheap, as I collect video game systems, but as far as dropping $300 at launch, hah hah, until it goes down considerably, I will stick with my Dreamcast, my Nintendo 64, and the rest of my systems, and wait for the GameCube,
