View Full Version : The One Thing I was Fearing The Most For The Dreamcast (Long)

You know, Half-Life for the Dreamcast has really pissed me off, or more to it, the developers of the Dreamcast version have really pissed me off, they delay the SOB for months, and months, and months, and months, without a SINGLE WORD, except for the fact that they were having a hard time getting some things worked out, then they drop internet play, TFC, and even split-screen multiplayer, I feared it had been cancelled, I was thouroughly relieved when I finally saw a solid release date, this month, it was advertised in all the local sales papers, the whole works, IGNDC.com even did a week-long feature on it with a near-complete version, then I login to IGNDC.com tonight, and see this,

"It's been a couple of weeks since the initial word that certain retailers had Half-Life for Dreamcast removed from their catalogs. Furthermore, Adrenaline Vault reported that, after contacting the EB Games Online Customer Service, the game is indeed not coming to the Dreamcast. We have contacted Sierra PR a few times about Half-Life for Dreamcast but it seems they aren't sure of what's going on with the game's status. To this end, we have talked to several retail managers ranging from EB, Babbages, Software Etc., and other local video game stores. Basically, they have removed the game from their in-store records and have refunded those who have pre-ordered the game. All of the store representatives and managers we spoke with say the same thing and at this point, we have to agree with them - Half-Life for Dreamcast seems to be canceled. Again, we're still waiting for the official word from Sierra in hopes that we're wrong and trust me, after delivering a week-long feature with our near final of the game, we really hope we're wrong. We'll be back with the official word from Sierra, so stay tuned.
(Ed's note: Although the facts point to the cancellation of the game, there is still no actual confirmation that Half-Life has been canceled.)

They have the ****ing game practically done, they have the ****ing box art done, THEY HAVE HAD TWO ****ING YEARS FOR THE SOB TO BE DONE, not creating a whole game from scratch, just PORTING the son of a bitch, I do not care what excuses they give, if id Software and Raster Production can port Quake 3 to the Dreamcast, and have it very closely resemble the pc version, there is no ****ing reason the people who DID THE DAMN TECH DEMOS FOR THE DREAMCAST cannot port Half-Life!, it is unexcusable, this is the one game I was looking forward most on the Dreamcast, and after so long fearing it would be cancelled, now it is, even if they have no definate word, I know it is, developers are leaving the Dreamcast like rats leaving a sinking ship, and instead of being intelligent, and finishing their games, and sell it, and make SOME $, they drop it all together, and flush all that ****ing $ they put into it down the drain, damn them, I want my Half-Life for the Dreamcast, (and for all of those saying get the pc version, I have it, beat it, I was looking forward to the visual enhancements to the Dreamcast version),

I can understand your anger, I kinda feel the same way, but not for HL, but for the whole Dreamcast. Friggin things are changing so fast its hard to keep up. Its a shame something so advanced and fun to play gets forced into retirement becuase of horrible management ( ATARI anyone? )
The DC's barely even being pushed to its tech limits with even today's games, it has so much more potential, hopefully SEGA doesnt give up all together on its abilities.
Quake3 was a prime example. The image quality and speed was so much better on the DC version than my k6-2 500 with a voodoo card, that right there is speaking highly for even a console machine.

Oh, I am upset about the entire thing, too, but this, this just totally set me off, I have even been saving space on my VMU for this damn thing, waiting in anticipation for Half-Life, and revel in all it's upgraded and enhanced glory, now this shit, sure developer, go ahead, waste the last two ****ing years of your time, $ and effort, go ahead, dump the damn game, cancel it, instead of taking a LITTLE more effort, and RELEASE THE ****ING THING, AND SELL IT, I have to critize them again, tho, if Raster can get a game that required a minimum of a Pentium 233Mhz., and 64MB of RAM to run fine on a 200Mhz. cpu and 16MB of RAM, (and even ****ing load faster than the pc version, to boot), I am sure it is really hard to port Half-Life to it, every day I read about another game being cancelled, you know, these morons really need to look at the installed Dreamcast user base, instead of going "Oh my God, the Dreamcast is dead!, cancel all Dreamcast projects immediately!", they should realize that the gamers that ALREADY have a Dreamcast are STILL potential sales, but of course not, they are worried about the bottom $, and fail to see that literally flushing ALL of their time and $ and effort on a game so damn near completion is worse than taking a chance, and actually releasing the game, and maybe even making $ from it,

And this time Sega even had the superior console. DC is waaay better than PS2. In the past they always had the lesser of the offerings (Megadrive to Super Nintendo, Saturn to PSX)... PS2 is so crappy compared to DC, but most people seem to care more for name recognition than for abilities (well, we know Americans do, with Bush and all, but the rest of the world did it this time as well)...
