View Full Version : Who reads Instruction Manual? (Small Survey)

I was working on Wednesday... as people do, and as I have a repetitive job my mind wanders. At about 11:00am a thought struck me, do people read instruction manual?
Now I know you occasionally will flip through it, look up the CD-Key, or even go to troubleshooting if your desperate, but who actually reads the ENTIRE manual? And this does include the damn obvious "Please turn off system before inserting CD" in the Playstation manuals.

I put this question out to you slackers, do you read the manual?

Makes good bathroom reading.

Depends. I did NOT read Baldur's Gate II's manual, because it is 241 pages (but damn, it is the best manual I have ever seen!). For most games, I skim the key controls and then just kinda wing it.

And the crapper is the appropriate place for reading.

I'll read the manual in certain situations:

1-Hardware installation (most of the time)

2-Software installation (only when)

a) experiencing problems

b) software is really outstanding, I want to learn more

I always read instruction manuals, I never play a game until I have, and BTW, on a Playstation, the power does not have to be off to insert a game, having it on without a game is fine, it just brings up the Memory Card management/CD player screen,

Notice that it does say to turn off power before inserting CD into Playstation in the manual, although your right and you can just shove it in

I'll usually give the manual a glance during installation, otherwise I don't touch it unless I need to find something out or I'm just bored. (although a game manual has been known to accompany me to the crapper on occasion)

For hardware, I never read the manual unless I'm severly stuck

I'm too proud to read the instruction manual for new hardware. It always feels like I am admitting defeat.

I read the "novel" (AKA the manual) That came with the game makes good reading that

I used to read the manual first for background and info on enemies etc, but I find that they're becoming increasingly dull and budget-sized these days, only bothering to explain the general outline of the game and the controls. Especially with those DVD-cases that are so en vogue around here these days (B&W manual is so small it could almost fit on a pamflet), grr.

Black and White?, damn, that has one of the biggest manuals I have ever seen, at 59 pages, it was huge as shit, lol, they must have changed it,

You know DVD cases? Yes? Good, good. Now, take that 59 page manual (not THAT big, by the way - just the Cataclysm manual here's 141 pages, and I've got quite a few larger ones) and see if you can fit it beneath those clippers at the inside of a DVD case without breaking them and leaving enough room for a CD.

They're very nice, those cases - but I really hate it when complex games that just SCREAM for a manual half the size of "War and Peace" are only available like that instead of good old sizeable boxes with plenty of room.

It did not come out here in DVD cases, but regular cases, or acually, cardboard like Quake's, in a regular box, is what I am saying, and it came with a 59 page manual that was huge,

Yes, I know what you meant. But here in the Netherlands (and probably the rest of Europe as well), DVD cases seem to be the latest fashion. Most new games are released that way instead of in large cardboard boxes, so they often have to seriously reduce the size of the manuals, to the extent of them becoming almost useless.

Drakkenfyre

And 59 pages may not seem like alot, but if you saw the book, you would think so, too, it was done on heavy stock paper, I think,

And these days instructiojn manuals are becoming a thing of the past, as more and more games are including in-game tutorials. And in B&W, the entire game is full of help and hints.. I didn't even pick up the manual. I found no point.

LOL You could beat someone with the 4.0 manual. Makes the box weigh about 3lbs. It is surely a pilfered textbook from a military flight school.

I only read manuals on the crapper or when I actually have to read them. I take a crap a lot so I usually end up reading at least part of every manual I own.
