Okay, I'm new to gaming but what got me started was Grand Prix Legends. The GPL community is loyal, respectful, diverse, and offers stiff online competition!
I have a P3 850, v5, 256mb ram and sb live, and 60 GB of hard drive space.
If you were to recomend six of the very best games that would work well on my system, which ones would they be? I'll continue to be a GPL hotshoe but I want to broaden my gaming experience.
I'm guessing that Serious Sam should be on the list, how about your advice?
Thanks.
1. Unreal Tournament
2. Quake 3 Arena
3. Black & White
4. NFS Porshe Unleashed
5. Deus Ex
6. Diablo 2
There are many, many more but you asked for six...... :)

Thank you Alybe. I figure that six will get me started without burning too big of a hole in my wallet.

Ailuros, I've really enjoyed GPL but it has also spoiled me. No other driving games seem real to me, including GP3 or NASCAR 3 (N3 is like riding a Clydesdale at the Kentucky Derby). That's why I'd like to branch out into new areas. Surprise me, I'd like to experience all that my v5 is capable of delivering. I'm open to new directions - adventure, first person shooters, strategy. I've stepped out onto a new world with gaming and I'd like to see the sights. I need a guide from someone who's been there already.
Man that was some corny sh1t. :p
You get the idea. Best of the best.

Together with the aforementioned games, I also recommend Shogun: Total War (a sort of RTS/turn-based strategy title). Single player's great fun, and the multiplayer battles are top-notch. An expansion pack is also on the way which offers a multiplayer campaign mode as well. Have a look (http://www.totalwar.com/) if you're interested.

A lot of fun titles mentioned.
Most gamers -- it is about price and picking the right titles for them at release or at any time.
But-- they're so many titles and in the past, well, how many titles did many buy that were more hype than substance?
I use to HATE that... and now... I never get too high about a release or too low and use the developers past products( IF ANY) to quide me to their future titles and views from gamers. I simply don't like buying something and getting a negative surprise.
Piano,
You mentioned Serious Sam....and a fun title at an incredible price and it fits home in the classic Doom mode but with more cutting-edge eye-candy. Even the sounds remind me of Doom.
If you are just starting out in certain Genres, well, I can think of three that are cheap and fun for many.
RTS-Total Anihilation/expansion pak can be picked up for a song-and-a-dance. A classic that still offers a lot today. And units? Hell yes, and wonderful air and sea units to boot. So many strageties to use to defeat the enemy. Not perfect...hehehehe...what is? But can offer hours and hours of fun for someone that never did play it before.
1st person/adventure:
System Shock2 can be picked up for less then 10 dollars and the game offers some mystery some nice sounds and moods and solid graphics and game-play and looks awesome with RGSS FSAA.
Half-Life, well, you can't get much better than this.
Some gamers like RTS--some don't. Some gamers like ONLY fragging games like Quake3 and UT. Choices, choices, choices and so many titles and so many genres.

Just buy Half-Life and then download Counterstrike... That's the only game you need right there :D

Thanks guys!
Of course I could recommend Grand Prix Legends (1998 game!) to anyone who likes driving games. It can often be picked up for $5 or $10 if you look for it. You do need a wheel for it though. The developers of the upcoming World Sports Cars say they view GPL as the ultimate racing title. It is very hard to master though. After more than 6 months with this game I'm still a mediocre driver, but improving. Probably why it didn't do so well in sales. Too real, but a lot of fun.
This week I'll check around for some of the titles everyone has mentioned the most often and let you know how much sleep I lose over the next few weeks. Thanks for the insomnia! :D

well most of the good stuff has been mentioned already, just a few to add:
alternative FPS: Tribes Glide
awesome "spaceshooter": Freespace2 Glide
"crap in your pants" adventure: Undying Glide
adventure: Hitman:codename47 Glide
funny and weird "comic": Stupid Invaders D3D
Choose whatever seems more appealing from the games all the guys listed above and if you need some in about 1 or 2 months (when I'll find time hopefully to start gaming again) I'll give you detailed flashbacks on anything you're interested. I can't do it now, not to embarass my overloaded and tired memory hehehehehe
happy gaming dude

I'm gonna be different - I'm gonna do the best of each genre.
Racing: Dethkarz! - 600mph with lasers!
Flight Sim: XWing Alliance - Cos it's starwars, and starwars r00lz joo!
Strategy: Red Alert 2 - Cos it's the funniest in the series.
Single Player FPS: Half Life - I never spent so much time playing games till I found that game!
Multi Player FPS: UT is really good, but I love fast action, and Quake3 delivers the goods.
Sim: I'm torn between Transport Tycoon, which stole whole months of my childhood, and Black&White, which is stealing all my free time (I had to stop playing for ten minutes, to stop me feeling omnipotent forever!) - I'm a wimp, so I'll call a draw!
Trivia: Austin Powers ; Opperation Trivia - It's just groovy baby yeah!
Scariest Game: Alien Versus Predator - I was cacking myself when I played as marine! - I nearly soiled myself when I got that first "blip"
Most fun Game: As cute and clever as Black and White is, it doesn't come close to the joy I had when I first chopped off both leggs, both arms and the head of this strange gremlin thing in Blade of Darkness - That game is a masterpeice - The way the leg just stays there swaying for a few seconds, as the rest of the body flies accross the screen - And the classic moment, when I chopped a guys leg off, and he just stood there hopping for a while, then fell over sideways. :)

Man, there is absolutely NO WAY I could limit my favorite games to simply 6. Not only that, I couldnt possibly number them either since there is no "favorite".. just different games for different moods. :)
So, in no particular order:
In the "strategy" genre:
Battlezone 1/2
Total Annihilation
Homeworld
Ground Control
Hidden and Dangerous
Uprising 1/2
Rainbow 6
Racing:
ANY Need for Speed game (1,2,HS,HP PU)
Motorhead
DethKarz
Powerslide
Dirt Track Racing
Motocross Madness 2
"Shooter" (3D Action games, online action games)
Serious Sam
Quake2
Sin
Tribes
Half-Life/Counter Strike
Alien vs Predator
Deus Ex
Wargasm
Mech Warrior 3
Heavy Metal FAKK2
Heretic II
Rune
Descent 3
Space/Flight Combat genre
Wing Commander Prophecy
Freespace 1/2
WW2 Fighters
Starfleet Command
Rogue Squadron
X-Wing Alliance
Crimson Skies
Flight Unlimited II
I have all those installed on my main gaming rig and flip between them. Variety is key and with all the excellent titles that have come out, it's hard to uninstall when ya' keep coming back for more constantly. :)
These are all on a P3-800, 256MB, V5 equipped rig with about 60gb of diskspace. So yer system is nearly identical to my main box.
Cheers,
-Shark
