View Full Version : Tomshardware on kyro2 (english version)

I've read it already in german, so I don't have to reread it. For those who where interested in the text between the benchmark graphs:
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/01q2/010425/index.html

Funny thing is the above preview was presented at tomshardware.de by Uwe Scheffel before Thomas Pabst posted his GeForce 3 review.

However dear Tom, without even including a kyro2 in any benchmark, or even meantioning it throughout the whole review, states the following in his conclusion:

Your current 3D-card will most certainly be able to run the 3D-games of the next 6-12 months just fine, especially if it has a GeForce, GeForce2 or Radeon based architecture and thus T&L. Without T&L you might be able to play today's games, but I doubt that any of the new game engines is going to appreciate 3D-cards without T&L anymore. Keep that in mind if you are considering a Kyro2 card.

No need to comment. Judge for yourself.

Tom seemed pretty positive in the article to me. (Even though I take everything he says with a grain of salt.)

Simple solution to Tom's crap: Don't read him. Don't give him hits. Just ignore him.

Lol. For some reason I keep hoping he'll come down to Earth a bit or start showing some more journalistic integrity.

He kept the review low-key enough to still get his weekly paycheck from nvidia. :D

Well I pointed out that the specific preview on the kyro2 is not from Tom, but from a guy named Uwe Scheffel.

Isn't it kind of rare that opinions on the same site differ that much?

The preview is ok, nothing to object about it. But where does Tom's comment in the GeForce3 preview about the kyro2 fit in? Definitely not in his article, and contradicts in a way one of his coworkers preview.

The same coworker (Uwe Scheffel),in his Elsa Gladiac 920 preview, came (I have still no idea how) to the conclusion that the GeForce3 gets lower scores in 4xFSAA than a GeForce2 Ultra, "because the 4xFSAA implementation was broken in the GeForce2 line, due to it's architecture limitations" (and that in 1024x768x32? pahleeaase). The exact same scores came out in q3a as in MDK2.......watch those graphs and tell me.....

This annoyes me. Some (alot?) cards don't have TnL.

Game developers won't make TnL compulsory, as then less people will be able to play the game.

SOME NEW GAMES DON'T EVEN have support for TnL.

well scotty let me make it more simple what I mean here:

TOM: GeForce3= good, kyro2=bad

UWE SCHEFFEL: kyro2=good, Geforce3=bad

fairly exaggerated from my side, but if you're interested in Scheffel's opinions you can pop his Gladiac article conclusion into an translator.

A quick translation of his takes:

kyro2= cheap and fast
GeForce3= expensive and only enjoyable in higher resolutions.

but what is wrong with Kyro?

or is he saying that from a high end user point of view the kyro 2 is bad?

But didn't the Kyro 2 beat the GF2ULTRA in some tests?

Ailuros

Actually the kyro2 did "beat" the ultra just in one single benchmark in the Serious Sam test2, which has shitloads of overdraw. Would they have used over at Anand's ($$$) the Dunes demo which has minimal overdraw the kyro2 would have been collecting the ultra's dust. :D

Anyhow that's not my point here scott.

We have:
www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com)
(english)

and
www.tomshardware.de (http://www.tomshardware.de)
(german)

Same layout, same articles (well not always, but the majority), yet opinions vary....

Same site, different reviewers, contradicting opinions. Quite uncommon IMHO.

Different markets and different targets?
Doubt it.

That review was pretty good in my opinion.
But I would like to see what happens if TOM wrote it.

Aidan,
see my first quote above in my initial post

Reviews on that site differ so much because most of the other people that write them aren't as biased as Tom, or simply the fact that Tom wasn't able to "edit" it before it hit the web. We'll see if the reviewer doesn't *clarify* his earlier review with an edit of his own, heh.

And again, Tom's a tweenkie.

let him edit it as much as he wants (I somehow doubt it), people have read it already......

You´re my new idol.... that was exactly what I wanted to say. I used to read his stuff, I was even dumb enough to buy his outdated book. I should shoot myself.

Biased= TOM

He talks all the shit he can about anything other than AMD & Nvidia.

Well, if you can wade through the mountains of BS, I'm sure there's good info in there somewhere :).

You gotta be very careful though... some of it is very, very subtle... ie, in his KT266 review, notice he was using 2 different brands of memory in the 760 and the KT266? And the stuff he was using in the KT266 just happened to be ever so slightly slower... and he used that to conclude that the KT266 sucks, and the 760 rocks. It's hard to notice that kind of stuff.

>>You´re my new idol.... that was exactly what I wanted to say. I used to read his stuff, I was even dumb enough to buy his outdated book. I should shoot myself.<<

Wahoo! I have a fan club! :D. At least you've seen the light about Tom now... you're a recovering Tom-Addict... lol.
