View Full Version : UTs' Hall of Giants

Still not bored with it after umpteen hours of play. There are so many ways to play.I haven't exhausted the many possibilities for different strategies it offers.BTW,SirPauly if you are reading this please tell me you've played this level with the 2nd CD textures.
I fell in love with it with the V5 in D3D.Occasional crashes but with 4xRGSS and some tweaking it blew my mind.On the GeForce3 it is even better in OGL.Some very slight texture shimmering but now I can enable everything and the aniso is very nice.I'm playing with 15 bots,8 players on each side and I think I could use a higher end cpu.
I'm not the greatest at FPS games so the wide open feel of this map really helps. There's enough tight spots and intersections to make for some intense up close and personal fragging though. The eax sound packs help also.
This is a great map to test your card and rig out IMO.With a V5 I would crank my lod bias as high as you can take. With the second CD textures I didn't miss not having detailed textures enabled. It's a shame those S3TC textures were never enabled for glide.
I swear at times I just marvel at the genius of the game.I'll be perched with my sniper rifle and on occasion I'll see two opposing groups of bots charge each other. The sight of all those different weapons going off, leaving trails as the bots dodge and jump, woof, what a feeling I get.LOL,and I've never even gone for the Redeemer,a rocket jump is in order I presume?I play with default gravity and speed.I'd enjoy reading others impressions of this map.I'm certain the right person could post some awesome screenshots, perhaps with a Radeon? ;)
End of Rant. :)
Edit:"Some very slight texture shimmering"-when looking at a wall in the Extreme distance and occasionally the edges of ramps for a very brief instant at certain angles. Not an issue really and I've set the lod bias in the UTini. OGL section for -.50.Couldn't say yet if that even works.

To get the Redeemer, you'll need to use translocation.
Speaking of translocation, there is a way to cross the map using it without any scripts or other BS.

That map is fantastic and one of the first maps I test with new drivers.
It is very fun to play and the design? Well, that is why they get the big bucks.. :)
A lot of nice maps in UT.
It is great that we all can enjoy the game.
I am enjoying all official UT maps at 1600 x 1200 and 32-bit colour with texture details on high and trilinear enabled in Direct3d.
Gorgeous, smooth, and stable with no artifacts.
I like the S3TC textures and glad I have the option but don't use them at this time due to a few nit-picks.
These IQ aspects kind of amaze me a bit on the Radeon:
All these aspects help with graphic effects and coloured lighting effects. It is so cool actually. Not huge on the surface when comparing -- but just adds more to the gaming experience for me.
I am going to install two Unreal engined games called the Wheel of Time this afternoon and re-install Deus Ex considering I just did a much needed reformat of my hard-drives in my main gaming rig.

Thanks GrimFaceOfReality,I was wondering.I'm not a fan of the translocator except on maps that have to have it.It's very cool especially with telefragging but I need to keep it simple. ;)
Thanks SirPauly, sorry about the D3D issues.Awesome map to showcase your aniso I would think.Hopefully the final? Epic patch will give us all a bit more,IQ and performance wise. What a bargain this game has turned out to be.BTW,SirPauly have you checked out the TruForm or is it N-Patch demo that http://www.rage3d.com/#978657578
has a link to?Apparently you need to have the ability to use some ATI specific OGL settings to play it.
BTW,I was playing around and I found that disabling detail textures gives a HUGE increase in the Thunder demo on my GeForce3 when I'm fillrate bound.Well I didn't buy this card to already start disabling stuff so I keep it enabled but for the first time I actually now use that setting in UT to set a minimum FPS.I have it set to 35 and it helps during vicious firefights.LOL,gives me the "courage" to enter those multi-bot fragasms.Unreal Forever peeps! :) ;)
P.S.Setting your desktop to 16 bit and having UT at 32 bit while your drivers are set to use desktop color gives about a 10% FPS increase, for me anyway.I think it is still using 32 bit textures.Still looks good although I only used it for the timedemo.I think I noticed some brief glitches.Next setting UT to 16 bit causes a crash but it will run OK at 16 bit upon restarting.Yech,a lot of nastiness appears with no gain over the previous setting.I guess it starts using 16 bit textures at that point.Hmm,I'll double check that 10% FPS increase. ;)

hall of giants looks really good.
but where do u get eax pack from?????
and s3tc looks nice but only works in open gl and i lose 50 fps over d3d with lots of stuttering. ill try turning off detail textures. changing color modes also gives me errors.......

Yes, I have fooled with that and tried to read as much as I can on TruForm but still would love to know the OFFICIAL information on the card. I think I know what the card will offer but doesn't translate into what is.

Hey Scott, long time no speak. :) Yeesh I wouldn't know where to begin on setting up a GeForce 2 to play UT with the beta OGL renderer.I'm still a relative newbie to videocards in general and high end nVida products in particular.3dfxs' V5 was my first REAL videocard.
You have a MX correct?Did you ever get that extra stick of memory?UT IMO plays much better (no swapping) if you have around 160 -256 megs of ram.It also loves high end cpu's but as I remember you have plenty.I'm sure you've read the tweak guides but maybe someone more experienced will give you some tips.
In case you never downloaded the latest (May 9th ) Beta OGL renderer.
Here are their recommended settings.
Here's a link to the GeForce FAQ.
But like I said, this board is loaded with smart posters, hopefully one of them will give you the straight deal.Later,Scott.

hey, thanks for the links!
I still got 128 MB RAM, but more hopefully will be on the way, as it is very cheap now.
I do have an MX. I use those settings except i turn the refresh rate up to 85 hz.
Also im thinking about turning detail textures off, to see whether the textures still look good with S3TC on
