Why is it that everytime I launch a game, the damn thing makes my monitor run at a pathetic 60HZ?

I tried Powerstrip with no success and right now I'm wondering if all the *security/stability* is worth it.

Solutions people?

There's a patch for that.. Let me see if I can dig up a link for you... But there is a patch.

That should be good for ya :)

Also, look around NT Compatible for some other cool stuff :)

Thanks msan, that would be great.
Right now, the tearing I experience without Vsync on due ot low refresh is disgusting.

And also,
the "msconfig" for win2k, I still haven't found a usable substitute.
The last time I posted, the 3rd party programes were complex and in German.
Anything simple?

I'd rather it had native support in some hidden or advanced place...
if anyone know, it'll be a great help.
Thanks!

Hmmmm, what I posted wasn't a patch. I think there is something like a patch though. Seldzar is a good person to ask. Check the MS online database as well.. I think there's a fix in there somewhere.

I never found anything that was worth a hoot. There are some progs that will let you change what "starts up" but nothing that will do everything you can do in msconfig.

I think NT compatible has a faqs on what services you need and don't need. Also, Tweak3d has a good faqs for stuff like that and should bring down the amount of resources needed at startup.

There is a refresh rate adjuster for voodoo cards in win2k but I don't have a link and will have to dig for it later.

The msconfig issue, try Xsetup. Or wait for winXP it has msconfig that does everything you want.
EDIT: update: http://www.tdfc.de/english/products/voodoo_freqsel.htm

That's the link in the 3dfx faq for the frequency selector that SHS mentions for the refresh rate fix. The link msan provided should work as well.

If your monitor is correctly recognized in Win2K, you can go into Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Monitor and then specify the refresh rate for that resolution.

Make sure that "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is checked, for obvious reasons. :)

I had the same problem in w2k. i use vcontrol to solve the problem.
http://www.voodooextreme.com/koolsmoky/v_ctrl.html

all you do is select your resolution and refresh rate and click apply and the program will memorize the refresh rate. just make sure auto apply settings when v. control is active is checked. i tried other programs such as powerstrip and the voodoo5 frequency selector and those did not work. vcontrol was the only prog that worked for me.

As for msconfig, you could always copy that from a Win9x box and use it in Win2K. If you don't have one available, X-Setup works nicely.

If you want to play l33t h4><0r, you can get the same results by hacking the registry :D

I could offer MCSE support for you if you have a legitimate copy.

Thanks for the tip, it worked great!

Ambience,
I have a TDK Blue Disk Win2K pro, bought from a pal for $A5, I appreciate MS's work but as I student, I can not afford their savage prices.
