Ok, so I REALLY wanted to play the two new zelda games on Game boy color right? But I couldn't bring myself to spend 69 dollars on a game boy color, knowing two weeks later, the Game boy advance woudl be out, and would play ALL the game boy, and game boy color games. So, I waited.
And yesterday was the BIG DAY!!! I ran to best buy right after work with 200 dollars in my pocket and got the following.
Game boy advance - Glacier
Link Cable
Screen magnifier/light
Recharable batery pack
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Super Dodgeball
The total came to 198.73.
Best buy gave you 15 dollars back if you bought 3 accessories and 10 back if you bought two games. So, I saved 25 dollars. Quite a nice deal.
ANYWAY, I take it home, and turn it on. I had already bought the two zelda games and had them for two weeks. But, I wanted to try Tony Hawk first cause I heard good things about it.
The first thing I notice is, the screen is rather dark. You needa LOT of light to see it good. Either light directly above you, or, If you you don't have that, you had better get a worm light or something. So, That was kind of annoying. But, since it is not backlit, it does save on bateries. Only 2 AA's will power it for 12 hours. Not bad considering the hardware.
But, on to the game. Tony Hawk is... well, FREAKIN AWESOME! I haven't had much time to play it, so I only have the first level and skateboard, but the animations on it are quite good. I was very very impressed with the quality of the game. Good graphics, and good music. And considering the size of the cartrages, wich is about HALF the size of regular game boy and game boy color, I was very impressed.
SO, I pull Tony Hawk out totally satisfied. Then, I slap in dodgeball. Now this game was freakin great. It was almost exactly like the original Nintendo version, with better graphics and sound. My cousin and I used to play that game for hours. So, I played that a little bit, and then my brother came over with his. He had bought one too. So, we linked them up, and played 2 player.
Now, here is where I was a little dissapointed. The link cables aren't too great. Twice while we were playing the game froze for a second, and then continuted. I don't know why, I am assuming "lag". But, it was rather annoying. If it does that with just two, how bad will it be if I plug in 4 together. Now, the idea of being able to link four is sweet, IF IT WORKS! But, I don't have two more, so i will have to wait to test that.
Anyway, then, I slapped in Zelda. Now, when you play the older gameboy games, you have a choice of keeping the old aspect ratio, or streatching it to fit this screen. Keep in mind this screen is more of a widescreen view. The original gameboy was more vertical. So, streaching it kind of jacks it up, so I just left it normal. ANd I LOVE Zelda. But, let me say this. You can most defineatly tell a difference in the graphics from a gameboy color game, and a game boy advance game.
I also tried by brothers F-Zero game. I was compleatly satisfied with it too. It had good control and just good all around.
But, what about phisical size? Well, it's a tad bit small. Kind of hard to hold on to. However, the batery pack I got was called "Batery Grip". That made it easy to hold cause it increased the size to a nice one. Plus, it was then easier to hit the L and R buttons.
Anyway, I was quite impressed. Overall, Nintendo did a GREAT job with this one. Of couse, should we expect anything else from nintendo. And as far as I know, no one else is working on a new handheld system. So, it appears Nintendo will CONITNUE to dominate that market.
One last thing, the number of games that are released already is very impressive. There are probalby close to 20 already.
Anyway, Just thought I would share my first experience with the new gameboy with everyone. IF anyone is looking for more info, just ask, I will try and answer it.
