The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken.
It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

That's a good question! It's a very slow engine, I don't think it'd have good 1/4 mile time.

They're made for barges and large ships... Takes A LOT of power to move those heavy things through the sea!

One thing I found really interesting is the way the pistons are made: There's holes in the bottom, and hollow tubes on the rods... The hollow tubes fit into the holes in the bottom of the pistons, and squirt oil inside of em to keep them cooler... Because engines that are taking in boost generate a LOT more heat!

The engine from the Dodge SRT-4 is the same way... Lots of high performance engines are.:)

If you want high performance over effeciency then gas turbines are "all that" in naval applications. Of course you could opt for effeciency AND performance through a nuclear powered steam turbine ! :bigthumb:

I'm terrified at the thought of the starting system. Can you imagine how much current it must take to get that thing to crank? The battery system (assuming that's the solution) must weigh a ton (literally).

They ususally just use smaller enines to start the big ones, a big block V8 or something along these lines.
