Trying to decide on an upgrade path.....

Well, I'm actually building my first system, and need some opinions.

I have just a few more parts to purchase, and they happen to be the most vital parts. That being the mobo, processor, and RAM. At the moment, I'm trying to decide on whether to purchase:

Abit NF7-S w/ Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton 333mHz FSB)
~$175.00

or

MSI "K8T Neo-FIS2R" K8T800 Chipset w/ Athlon64 2800+ (Socket 754)
~$300.00

I'm trying to decide if the extra $125 is worth it. I'd like to not have to upgrade for a while (except for new vidcards) after I build this system. (Heh, I've been using a k6-2 500 for the last 5 years :P ) And I probably won't be overclocking. So, what do you guys think?

As long as the board supports the hardware you wanna put into it, the NF7 should be fine, im probably gonna use one in my new rig. If you dont plan on overclocking, i can't really see a point in getting a board for $100 more unless you just have to have gigabit lan or something... :rolleyes:

Don't buy a socket 754, its going the way of the dodo. Ignore 64 bit platforms for the moment.

Get the Abit board (do you need the in built soundstorm?) get the non -S version for cheap, overlcock the hell out of your chip and memory (it will run 400fsb DDR) and put the savings into a x800pro or 68ooGT - that's my plan :)

Um, I knew that the second option is a 64-bit chip :) , and I know that AMD is going to focus on socket 939. I'm trying to decide which of the above options would be a better choice. Methinks the second option might allow me to not have to upgrade for a longer period of time, and would give me better overall performance. The first option is considerably cheaper, but would I have to upgrade sooner than I would like to? :dunno: And remember, I'm not particularly interested in overclocking.

I doubt 64 bit tech is going to take off that much anytime soon making it worth upgrading, but there are some AWESOME deals... check Gibb's thread.
