Chuck Palahniuk came to my town to support his new novel Diary. He signed my copy of Lullaby, my girlfriend has never seen Fight Club or read any of his books but over the summer a guy at her job was reading Choke and she thought it looked interesting.
So I picked up a copy of Choke for her, told him my girlfriend hasn't read anything by him and I was picking this up for her, he signed "To a fellow sex maniac, Chuck Palahniuk". I think that will make a nice suprise for her tommorow :)
He stated that over 60 people had passed out listening to an excerpt from his book due out next summer , Hauntings. He then read the story "Guts"
Now I have been all over the internet, seen everything imaginable on stileproject, bangedup.com, rotten, you name it. Read just about everything, but hearing this guy read this, ugh, something about the way he read the story it was just painful to hear, I won't ruin it but it was the most disgusting thing I have ever listened too.
A guy behind me was all chatty in line, but then once guts was read he kneeled down and turned his head away from the crowd, nervously playing with books, as the story got even more grotesque he put his head in his jacket, and I swear I heard him throw up in his mouth, or at least heave.
Another audience member, some "punk rawk" girl with green hair bolted for the door and threw up in the street.
Now I know what you are thinking "You thought it was gross? I am so much more nihilistic and insensitive than you! I could listen too it while eating an aborted fetus and not be bothered!" but trust me, you had to be there and hear it outload and visualize, just finding it on the net isn't good enough. There were some elementary school aged kids in the audience which is disturbing in itself.
He then took questions and threw fake severed appendages at the audience.
All and all en enjoyable experience, he is a good speaker and seems like a nice guy.
Oh yeah, he mentioned that all of his books sans Lullaby are slated to become movies, Survivor by the maker of Requiem & Pi(Andrew Daranowski? too lazy to check imdb), and another I don't remember being directed by David Fincher and music being done by Trent Reznor. This info is all online already though.
Fun night :)
