Can't go wrong with the Q3 Engine.

I am getting tired of seeing every other game running on the Quake 3 engine, seems like there is really only a couple of engines that are used for an entire year or two worth of games, Quake 2 and Unreal, then Quake 3, and Unreal Tournament, next thing will be the Unreal 2, or Unreal Championship engine, then the Doom 3 engine will be used for everything,

Whats the title of Star Wars Episode 3 going to be???,, 'Clone Wars', Or 'Rise of the Empire'???

Well if more game designers made better engines most games would use those too, but thats not whats going on. ID made a killer engine thats highly flexable with textures and OpenGL, you have to give them thier props. And you have to admit , there is not one Quake3 engine based game that looks like Quake3 Arena, they are all different, especially ALICE. Alice used highly detailed textures that Q3A didnt even use. Heavy Metal used a whole new way of fighting and character movement that Q3A didnt use. So the Engine is very advanced and seems to not even been used to its highest degree yet.
oops,,the next one?,,episode 2

About a year back I was working with a MOD development team for a game called Everquake, which would have been an MMRPG FPS mod. My business partner at the time was really into coding and did some pretty interesting things with the dev kit which used a server based data collection system to "remember" people who had logged into the server. It was great stuff, unfortunately things didn't pan out and it's been dead for quite some time. You can learn about the program at

I was Wolf *sniff* Damn I miss the potential of that project.

Without giving away anything heres a nice quote from GL himself.
"The final scene of Episode 2 is a prelude to where the galaxy is heading. The Clone Wars are coming and the galaxy will never be the same. The entire galaxy will be at war. Palpatine will use the wars to destroy those who oppose him. By the time the wars are over, Palpatine will be the Emperor. Darth Vader will be his second-in-command. The Jedi will be no more except for a handful who escape and go into hiding. The Republic will be wiped out and replaced with Palpatine's New Order . . . I'm looking forward to the completion of Episode 3 so that I can retire from Star Wars for good. Star Wars has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, but, at the same time, it is a great burden being the creator of Star Wars. I'll be glad to finish the final chapter in this saga and place the finished work on the shelf forever. The movie series will not continue after Episode 3, but the story will continue to expand and evolve in the various comic books and novels. It's time to move on to other film projects." (Source: George Lucas)
What I find neat about all this, is LUCAS seemed to know the future when he made STARWARS back in the late 70's. In the present we are having our own "clone wars" in the political arena. An amazing guy.

The way I see it is other people try to come up with better Engines and fail. I personally like the Q3 Engine. If someone would come up with something better I would be all for it. Thats just not happened yet.

Listen has anyone heard that there was for a brief period on the net a trailer for the second movie? This was reported recently on Entertainment tonight.
Apparently lucas showed some of it somewhere and some one taped it and it got on the net briefly.
A buddy of mine works at a local comic shop here in Toronto and there is a client at the store who claims to have some of it on C.d.
Heard anything???
May the force be with you....

Oh, the Quake 3 engine is good, and can do some good stuff, all I am saying is I am tired of seeing "Powered by the Quake 3 engine" on seemingly every single FPS, same way back when Quake 2 was hot, every developer and his brother licensed the Quake 2 engine, it just seems like id creates an engine, and then for the next 2-3 years, every game developer uses it, then they create another, and the cycle continues, I know without a doubt that the Doom 3 and Unreal 2 engines will be shopped around even more than the Quake 3 engine,

Drak thats the nature of sales. You add a big name sponsor or "maker of..." on the label and people buy it in droves. The same goes for videogames and candy bars. If it says "contains Real Hershey's Chocolate" people will buy it, but only this time its "Made with the Quake3 Engine". And its not like the game is horrible without ID's code, it needs a selling point too.

I know that is the nature of sales, my point is it seems like the industry always follows id, and licenses their engines, which is nothing new, but it just seems like hardly anyone codes their own engines anymore, I know licensing an engine is a cheaper and easier way than building your own from scratch, but I just would like to see more engines in use,

Coding engines cost bucks, and in this day and age when gamers want new twists to an old theme it's more economical to go with an engine, changes the enviornment a bit and add new textures.
Most companies would rather spend the 100k for existing technology because they know that the engine is solid and time proven, the engine was designed for the purpose easy adaptability to other games, and will allow th existing game to live on through the new ones.
I'm actually glad there are not so many new game engines around, look at all the newer FPS games that were just released off of their own engines and how buggy they are.
Thoes look Voodoo5 quality.
JK2 is on Lucasarts site too... It says "Spring 2002"! *Sigh* the wait begins *sigh*

babystinky, I saw one a few months back that was total BS. Looked like authentic stuff mixed with other crap. There was actually a piece of Braveheart spliced into the middle of it, one scene where the two armies are about to colide. If I can find it back, I'll post the link, but I haven't seen it for a while.

Well that wasn't to bad...
Here's (http://www.adcritic.com/content/fake-movie-star-wars-episode-2.html) the fake I was talking about.
And actually here (http://www.theforce.net/theater/trailers/episodeii/index.shtml) is what I found at the same time. Looks to be closer to what you were talking about. Going to check this out myself, PRONTO.

That is great :)
Looks very real... Someone did a great job on that one...
I wish George Lucas, would stick with his (DESTINEY) of going ahead and completeing episodes 7,8,and 9,,it just wouldnt be the same if he didnt,What he outta do,since he OWNS LUCASFILMS, Is do like Walt Disney did,and HIRE A BUNCH OF CREATORS,and a whole film staff, of writers and producers, and just kik back and let THEM do it,you dont see "DISNEY'S" name in the crrdits like "SNOW WHITE" just the production, then it wouldnt be a burdan on him!! :D :D
