View Full Version : watching ANH

ok the more i watch this movie i come to the realization that i'm glad i was a kid when i first saw it or else i'd never have become a fan. the inconsistencies and the cheesy disalogue are a bit much this day and age. and the climactic saber battle between kenobi and vader is akin to watching old people fuck. especially after seeing the saber battles from the other movies. i mean take for example the battle in the emperors office from ep3. now this dude is ancient and he's doing backflips like mary lou retton and slaying other jedi with ease. yet all you get with ANH is some seriously slow jab & parry, no force powers used and a generally slow and boring looking fight. to me this encounter is very distracting.
i also find the story tough to swallow on many occasions. like leia's attitude after her home planet is obliterated. where is the frickin grief for cripes sake. it's like oh well we got this rebellion thing going on so no time for tears, ho hum.
and wtf is up with giving some farmboy what amounts to a multi million credit piece of machinery and telling him go for it son, fight the empire to the best of your ability. now i know there is rl precedence to draw on here from the battle of britain during WWII when they put any able body into a plane but it just doesnt work for me with this movie. and when ben says, "Use the force" i am almost gagging anymore since the truth is he didnt even have time to learn shit about it let alone grasp enough of it to fire 2 perfect shots into the death star.
that's another thing, how the feck do they justify 2 shots blowing that thing to smithereens in a matter of seconds. to me that takes way too much imagination to comprehend. i mean a slow implosion would have been more viable imo but total destruction on 2 shots????
oh well i'm doing way too much analyzing when i watch these movies anymore instead of just watching them for fun's sake. i guess suspending belief is getting harder to do in my cynical old age. i can only say that lucas caught many of us at just the right age as to not question a lot of this bunk he delivered. the story is great but the telling of it leaves much to be desired.

Well obviously.

I don't think you've been watching the right mature porn. But yeah, in comparison it is rather tame. Let's just say both were old and rusty, especially Kenobi

I don't find it too hard to believe she didn't experience the full impact of the experience till later. That happens a lot in real life. She just didn't have time to process her grief before.

Aren't you forgetting he was also going to the academy on Tatooine? He had plenty of experience in a Skyhopper and was rather good at it.

FX were limited and that thing blowing up like it does just looks cool, m'kay...

going to the academy on tat? what academy? isnt that what him and his uncle were arguing about in the first place? the chance to even go to the academy? :hmm:
and old and rusty i'll bite but still no force powers used? in the very next movie vader threw everything but the kitchen sink at luke. and he did more lunging with purpose. like when they're out on the catwalk and he's slamming his saber off the crossbars and cutting shit in half. hell dooku was not a spring chicken either but in ep2 he ko's a jedi and his padawan with ease.
ANH is old and stale to me now. just like that fight. :(

ANH has been old and stale since i saw the original trilogy, anyhoo, Vader knew very well that he had Kenobi's ass, why even bother with powers? Luke used to hit WOMPRATS with his t-16, now i know you've seen womprats, and they arent much of a sight to behold. something else i wanted to say but cant think of ATM...

it's just a movie, and obviously an imperfect one, you can either like it despite it's imperfections or not, but it's kinda pointless to try to make it perfect with little excuses lol.

ty ;)
btw the other's are still cool and i cannot wait for ep3 to release so i can watch it 100x. :)
I still find it most enjoyable. The atmosphere is still spot on and there are few movies out there that create that big a living galaxy in a single 2 hour movie and do it convincingly. I think Riddick is the only one that managed to do the same thing in all that time.

lol
it's just that now i can see it's shortcomings and understand why lucas originally thought this movie would not do well. it's horrible if you think about it too long.
one thing i noticed tho is that the pacing is exactly like that of ep3 in that a lot of things seem rushed. i never saw that before. did he direct both movies?
