I was reading the letters page on BBC Teletext, and someone wrote in suggesting that parachutes etc should be put in all skyscrapers.

Pretty much like fire extinguishers and fire blankets are found almost everywhere these days.

Not a bad idea IMO.

Thats kinda funny, given the size and load a parachute the size needed to stop a building the size of the WTC from falling - and then there is the wind to think about...imagine a building the size of the WTC just floating across Manhattan...

Well, that's definitely a novel way of looking at it.

My personal idea always has been a NASA style escape. You have harnesses on the roof and a cable connecting the building to the next rooftop. That way you put on the harness, clip onto the steel cable and slide down to the next building. Astronauts do this off the launchpad of the Space Shuttle.

But parachutes are great for offices if they cant make it to the roof. But one problem is winds can smack them back into the building injuring them or collapsing their parachute.

...better a chance, than falling to your death. I know I would rather take my chances with a parachute than not have one.

Yeah, I never really thought about the wind thing.

But still, I'm with Pauly here ~ I'd rather chance it with a parachute than with nothing at all.

im thinking we just kill all the worlds terrorists, then we dont hafta worry about the little bastards running our jets into our buildings.

probably a better way of dealing with this, IMO.

How about beach umbrellas?

People wouldnt know if they are witnessing a disaster or a Merry Popins acid trip

Yeah, but the thing about that is, if you take out bin Laden (for example)...more will just sprout up in his place.

It's virtually impossible to round up every single terrorist, plus all supporters, unfortunately.

nobody in Canada or the US ever likes European ideas, but i like most of them, like roundabouts, and setting schools further away from streets so traffic can go at a normal pace rather than have everyone crawl along at 30km/h (wich is way to slow for todays cars, mabey 30km/h is as fast as a model T ford can go and be abel to stop in a good dictance, but this is 2001) and cause a mini back up.

Better idea.......don't design buildings that can't be completely evacuated in a few minutes.

make a design for it and patent it. easier said than done.

You may not believe it, but one of the first things I thought after I heard the news on Tuesday, and how all those people jumped out to avoid the flames, was exactly what you describe. I suppose great European minds think alike.

True, but there are also accidents and natural disasters (fire, earthquakes and such). Having a spare 'chute wouldn't hurt methinks.
