It looked good a while ago - but I don't know if I can set through 2.5 hours of Bruckheimer/Bay treacle just to see the cool kersplosions for 30 minutes.

I'm not optimistic. Modern day Hollywood hardly ever get's history right. Out of all the people on the Titanic, they had to make up people to get a story? Out of all the people involved in so many way's with Pearl Harbor, they had to invent people, they couldn't have found a few "true" stories to tell? From all that I have read the action sequences are second to none, but the story iutself is getting butt slammed all over the place, and I have a feeling that it is for a good reason. I got a feeling it will suck, except for the action. And it's a damn shame, too, they could have made an excellent movie using real instances, and to add in the Doolittle<?) raid at the end is bullshit, it doesn't have anything to do with anything, but can't have US citizens walking out of the theatre feeling defeated now, can we? As I said, I'm not optimistic, and I don't plan on seeing it. Unless someone wants to send it to me decoded, heh.

I liked the battle, but historically it suffered. Likewise in the love story dept.
Worth seeing though.

Its worth a matinee or rental.
The battle - about 45min smack in the middle of the film - is about the only thing worth seeing. The rest of the plot devices were so predictable, my wife and I were guessing quite correctly the fates of various characters after they said a few lines.
Sad really.
I'm not really surprise at the schmaltzy love-story and background filler they tossed into the movie - this is Bruckheimer and Bay, and if anyone saw Armageddon, they know exactly what I am talking about - it really detracted from the overall story and added insult to injury as far as I'm concerned.
I give it 1.5 out of 4 stars, with 4 being a great movie and no stars being total ass and on the verge of ripping a hole in the fabric of space-time and swallowing the audience whole.
BTW - anyone else catch the critic (CNN I think) who made a real ass out of himself by complaining that "Bombs explode on impact, they dont drive themselves through 3 decks of steel" in reference to the destruction of the Arizona? Did he ever pay attention in school?

I think it sucks how P.C. it had to be. Like for instance they weren't allowed to say "cowardly" Japanese as it may offend people. C'mon, are they trying to re-anact histroy or be nice? You can't be both.

I guess I didn't either... Why don't they explode on impact?

Certain bombs can be set to explode on impact, after impact, a set amount of time after impact, or even at certain altitudes, bombs do a great deal more of damage if exploded from the inside, especially if it sets off the ammo room(s),

The bombs could also have been remote controlled, as they were testing the theories in the early 1940's.
The bombs that exploding on impact are pretty much useless for destroying warships as the would only injure the hull and maybe make a mess of the integrity of the ship. But a blast from the inside would be much more dstructive...(see Armageggon for full explanation). Congrats on the Producer for having half a brain.
yeah exploding the comet from the inside with nukes. but 1 question. how the **** would u be able to land a space shuttle on a comet? come on?

Notice that they didn't land, they crashed.
So thats how they pulled it off.

The bombs used against Battleship row were reinforced devices with a fuse. The bomb struck the hull, would penetrate through the armored plate, then the fuse would detonate the weapon.
Nasty buggers. One of those, which struck the Arizona #1 battery armory ripped the ship into two pieces and literally LIFTED the ship out of the water a foot or so
