SCMB Usage Rules
Posting guidelines

This is a "work safe" messageboard, meaning anyone reading the SCMB at the office should survive if the boss walks by while he's checking out the new posts. The following items are not allowed here:

  • Racism/Hate
  • Unwarranted/personal attacks
  • Pornographic or lascivious images
  • Posts about illegal activities (like warez and file sharing)
Do not link directly to anything pornographic. If you want to link to something that's borderline (not necessarily porn, but probably not office friendly), be sure to clearly mark in your post that the link may not be safe for work viewing so people can decide for themselves whether they want to check it out.

Regarding personal attacks, it's a fine line when they are inappropriate. In topical threads, attacks against other users are not permitted. Attack the argument, not the poster. If you have a problem with another user and want to call them on it, start a specific thread for that purpose and keep the discussion there. Don't derail other threads with whatever issues you might be having with someone.

On Topic/Off Topic

Moderation is stricter in the "on topic" forums. When replying to a thread outside of Off Topic, please make sure your comments follow the topic at hand, especially in The Debate Club, The Water Cooler, Gaming Discussion, and 3dfx Refugees.

In the Off Topic forum, you can pretty much post any fool thing you want, as long as you follow the other rules listed here.

Swearing

Swearing is permitted here, but don't go overboard. Remember that it bothers some people, and we want this community to be enjoyable for anyone who may come by. Therefore, we have two rules:

  • No swearing for the sake of swearing (with no redeeming value to the post)
  • No swearing in thread titles
These rules make it easier for people to avoid swearing if they choose to.

Spam

Spam is not allowed here. Spam is:

  • Registering and posting with the sole purpose of leading our users to another site.
  • Posting nonsense all over the boards just to annoy people.
Either of these infractions will result in a suspension of your account.

Annoyances

Please be sure to refrain from annoying behavior on the messageboard. It's hard to define what's annoying without making this document unreasonably long, but here are a few examples:

  • Raising threads from the dead - when starting a thread, feel free to search for the potential topic to see if it has been posted before. If it has, and you have something relevant to add to the discussion, feel free to respond in the existing thread. However, please do not raise old threads back from the dead without a good reason. An example of a good response would be to a thread about a movie you had gotten around to seeing late. A bad example would be a response to a thread just saying "Hey I remember this!"

  • Please observe the standards used on the messageboard by the community. For example, don't demand that LOL means "Love Our Lakes" and insist on using it your way while confusing everyone else. Also, don't respond other posters by placing your comments above the [quote] tag.

  • Don't respond to every single thread you can find just to see your username all over the forum.

Signatures

Signatures can be no longer than 8 lines, and may not contain a few different vB codes (you can see which ones are restricted on the signature editing page). Also, please refrain from swearing in your sigs.

Disciplinary Actions

Almost all infractions on the SCMB will result in a simple warning. If the offending behavior continues, a suspension will likely follow. Please do not circumvent the suspension by creating a new account. This will almost always result in a permanent ban. Banning is a last resort here; if you pay attention to warnings given by the moderators you won't have to worry about it. No one is banned here unless they're really working on it.

There are two types of warnings you may receive: temporary and permanent. A small infraction or first time offense will almost always be a temporary warning. A repeated offense will result in a permanent warning. Permanent warnings can pile up and eventually result in suspension or termination of your account.

SCMB Subscribers

Subscribers get to upload their own avatar, choose their user title, attach images to their posts, and use the private messaging system. To subscribe to the SCMB please click here.

Please note that subscribers are still subject to the same guidelines as everyone else. As mentioned above, we don't ban anyone without sufficient warning, so if you get yourself banned you'll have to really work on it. No refunds are offered in this situation.
