I need some secret underground help

A friends laptop took a complete dive. I was able to salvage the data by removing the hard drive. Problem is, a bunch of his music is protected mpeg... I'm guessing from online itunes purchases??

I've never entered this realm and don't even know what the legalities are. All I want to do is get his music onto his new computer the quickest and easiest way, hoping its legal.

If anyone can help me do this I'll be your online lover for 2 and a half days. PM me if it requires haxoring. My conscious is clear, I'll be following the spirit of the law.

If these are legit iTunes purchases, all that should be necessary is to authorize the new computer in iTunes. You get to use the protected content on 5 machines, if I remember right.

LOL - I had completely forgotten about my scmb email address. Man I don't think I've hit that pop server once in the 3 years my son has been here.

I wonder if I can even remember how to use it

This is one of the reasons why physical media won't go anywhere just yet. When my DVD player breaks, I can still play all my movies on another one just fine...

Oh well, I guess it's safe enough to just say the program name... FairUse4WM.

Does he have an Ipod?

Try tunejack.... cost me a whole $10.00 and it synchs your computer with your Ipod.

Swore I replied to this...

I took care of it. Just moved the files and authorized the new computer like Statboy said. Suprisingly simple, but I feel sorry for people that use up their 5 authorizations. Glad I never got into this digital media thing. Purchases that is

So what exactly is the advantage of itunes then? It seems silly to jump through hoops just to do something this simple..

To be fair the hoops were pretty easy, I just wasn't aware there was an easy solution.

Regardless... I've gotten to the point where I just hate itunes. It's slow, it's HUGE, it updates itself every 15 minutes...

The only reason I love my ipod is that it has become the standard that audio companies are interfacing with. I wish I could connect and control a different mp3 player with my Denon receiver like I can an ipod, because I would wipe away the putrid essence of itunes from my computer.

Ask him where the files came from, and see if that website allows for them to be re-downloaded or authorized for use on another PC.

iTunes lets you de-authorize a PC from another PC, so you can turn off his old PC and authorize a new one.

Fancy. Well then that is just a pretty decent system that I got all hot and bothered over nothing about.

I just got tunejack for 10 bucks....loaded iTunes on the new computer and used it to sync the computer to the Ipod. No authorization or deauthorization needed.

Plus I never buy anything from iTunes. Amazon.com has a program where you can buy music at better prices and it automatically puts it in your iTunes folder.

If you want a quick easy FREE program to bypass iTunes with, just download Winamp.

Winamp is a very well known program, complete free, looks kinda like itunes, and 5 minutes after downloading winamp on my new laptop I was copying music back and forth from my iPod with no problems.

I backed up all my iPods music in no time, and add new files with ease.
