Deus Ex Tweaks & Modifications (Moved from Steam thread)

Anyone else have trouble running Deus Ex and things looking like shit? PROBLEMS SOLVED. Just run in DX10.

http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

Had to be way more detail-oriented than usual in following instructions, but that's not because it's hard, it's because I'm impatient. Anyway, follow instructions, don't skip the downloads or the new EXE, make sure you select DX10 as the renderer, and DISCO!

Personal note: Why doesn't anyone use Detail Textures anymore? Always liked the look of 'em.

We talking the S3 textures?

Afaik they were custom built for UT.

Using those textures was later allowed by (newer) cards other than the S3 Savage so we got to use them.

Other peeps have swiped them.

I don't think S3 released their tools though so modders couldn't just make their own detailed and compressed textures.

As vid memory increased modders could just make larger textures.

Nice pic's: http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/?page_id=2

Yikes, S3 is still around!

No, detail textures. As you get closer to a surface, instead of walking into a blurrier and blurrier texture, another (transparant) texture is revealed with fine detailing of the surface you're looking at. Was used to great effect in the earlier Unreal games.

Always liked the look of those as well...

Hope this works for anyone who tries it.

Deus Ex Widescreen Utility This is a program I wrote for Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War that lets you play in a widescreen resolution with a proper FOV and HUD size according to your aspect ratio.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2088245

I found what is hopefully a solid mod for Deus Ex IW so I'm going with that.

Download speed isn't great this time of day for me so I'll just let Steam do its thing.

The mod: http://www.john-p.com/textures/DX-IW/

Huh, everything working and with 4x supersampling ftw.

\Steam\steamapps\common\deus ex invisible war
is where I had to point the widescreen fixer, took a few tries till I re-read the thread and got that suggestion. Didn't have to set anything to "read only".

Easiest texture mod I've ever used. Comes with an uninstaller too that supposedly puts everything back to default. Kudos!

Game is not bad, so far it feels like an Adventure/Action mashup that has some very light rpg bleshed in.

I love a good adventure game. As an action/rpg game some of the visuals are equivalent to those from a few years back, even with the mod. But everything is quality. Character's ears could be better.

By Adventure game standards the visuals are Ace.

Had to lower mouse sensitivity. Thought I had the dreaded speedup issue at first but it's just that the game has your character set to "run" by default. Can be toggled, but not changed afaik, but I quickly got to like the default.

Not sucking me in like an A list Adventure game would but it's good. I think my gameplay will be sporadic but for five bucks that will be ok.

Resident Evil 5 is awesome... Even better on the PC, imo.

*edit* BTW, is it possible to mod Deus Ex in Steam (HDTP, for example)?

Hope it aint' the Resident Evil demo I downloaded on the 360 where you constantly run out of ammo. If I'm going up against thousands of zombies in a secluded town in nowhere, I'm packing more than six bullets in a pellet gun! Im packing some heavy artillery, and if not, I'm telling the commanding officer I'm sitting this one out! Know what I'm saying? Not going into battle with a pellet gun with a half a round of bullets, lol.

Deus Ex, Steam, and You: THEY KINDA WORK TOGETHER As a good lot of you may know, Deus Ex is available on Steam for the paltry sum of $10. As some of you may know, this version of Deus Ex does NOT, for reasons unknown, work with many (if not all) mods out there. The question has come up many times, "WHY I CAN NOT HAZ DX MODZ?!". Well, boys and girls, read up and be learn-ed (Note: Most of the information in those post are copy-pasted from previous threads, so don't be surprised if it feels like you've read it before):

WHY does the Steam Deus Ex not work with mods?
The why is unknown to me, but I can speculate. It appears that Eidos modified the DeusEx.exe file to only run if it is called through Steam. The filesizes are the most obvious give-away; the retail copy of DeusEx.exe weighs in at 248KB, while the Steam copy of DeusEx.exe is only 62.5KB. It's anyone's guess what the exact differences (at a code level) between the two are; all I know is that if you try to run mods with a vanilla install of Steam DX, you'll get bupkiss. I also found out that the Steam DeusEx.exe doesn't like OpenGL mode at all, even with the new renderer in place; it's like Eidos enforced D3D functionality when they released it on Steam.

Well, that kind of sucks. How do I get mods to work, then?
Well, the long and short of it is, you need a copy of DeusEx.exe from a non-Steam copy of the game. Find yourself one (PLEASE NOTE: Hosting this EXE file for download is NOT LEGAL IN ANYWAY) Replace the Steam DeusEx.exe with the retail DeusEx.exe and it should work.

If you're trying to use a mod like HDTP or TNM through Steam, you'll need to replace the exe that shares the mod's name with a retail DeusEx.exe renamed to <mod name>.exe (for example, replace Steam 'HDTP.exe' with retail 'HDTP.exe'). The reason for this is that most full-conversion mod installers make a copy of DeusEx.exe that's found in the ./System/ folder; since the DeusEx.exe in the Steam folder is broken to only work through Steam, HDTP.exe is also broken.

I mentioned earlier that OpenGL doesn't work with the Steam install of DX. If you replace DeusEx.exe with retail DeusEx.exe, you'll gain back that functionality.

EER asked in another thread, "Isn't hdtp.exe just deusex.exe with some parameters strapped in? And if so, couldn't you just add the parameters through steam?" Technically, yes, HDTP.exe (and mods that used copies of DeusEx.exe) is just DeusEx.exe. When you add an external game to your Steam game list, Steam creates a shortcut to that game. When you click on that, it acts as though you just clicked a shortcut on the desktop. You CAN add in parameters to the Steam shortcut entry just like a desktop shortcut; right-click the game in the list, select Properties, and place "Target" from the desktop shortcut into the Steam shortcut's "Target". After doing that, you can launch games like HDTP and TNM from Steam. Note that this method must be done in conjunction with replacing DeusEx.exe with a retail copy

What mods work with the method described above?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say all of them. The ones I've tested and know for sure work are listed below:
- HDTP Release 1
- The Nameless Mod
- Shifter 1.8
- Zodiac Mod (thanks Dead-eye!)

I've got a lot of stuff to do right now, so this was a bit rushed. If you have any more questions, I'll answer them and add them to the OP.
Good luck and please post your results.

Y'know that link for the DX10 path method of running Deus Ex? (Might be needed anyway, my system had major glitches in both D3D and OGL). Same page has a modified .exe to launch the game right there. I got it through Steam too, and swapping the .exe worked just fine.

There is ammo everywhere, you just have to keep an eye out... Destroy boxes and barrels, they sometimes contain ammo.

Also, time your shots carefully. In the beginning of the game, you have to be very conservative with ammo. Have your follower pick up ammo too. It took me 3 tries to get past the zombie hoard part, but I made it out with ammo to spare.

I am on chapter 3 now, and I have an MP5... Ammo hasn't been a problem yet.
