Installing FakeFactory Cinematic Mod for HL2. :)

Link.

I haven't checked this mod in years, at first, it was only for HL2... Then later on, they did a little bit for HL2:E1. The new mod (in full) is almost 9gb, and has new stuff for all 3 games, including HL2:E2.

The screenshots look pretty amazing. A few things though: The full version requires 4gb of RAM, and in turn that means it requires a 64-bit OS. Also requires a very good videocard.

I'm installing right now, but have to go to work in an hour, so probably won't be able to try it until later tonight.

It didn't work... I might have messed up, there are a few steps in the installation process that I didn't do (you have to play each game long enough to save), plus a few other things.

Will have to try it again later.

I'll check it out too. I can't wait for Black Mesa Source. When that comes out I am probably going to play BM:S through Episode 2 from start to finish. Just to get myself pumped for Episode 3... a game no one has any hard details about. :p

It's a complete overhaul of the graphics... New models, new textures... Much higher quality than standard. There's also a new soundtrack that's optional, very orchestral stuff.

Yeah, take a look at the screenies.

Since I never finished HL2 (lost my save when almost done), and never played epi 1 or 2, i'm considering playing it through again with this mod. I didn't realize how dated HL2 graphics have become. I guess it came out a LONG time ago... but it doesn't seem that long.

Source engine is still awesome, but from what I've heard, the dev tools that come with the SDK are very outdated.

Source is still very capable, I don't think I've ever seen better physics in any game... Lighting effects are solid, too. Models are plenty detailed, and the facial animations are unmatched currently. The actual textures aren't the most detailed, but there are some devs out there who are really pushing the boundaries of what Source games can look like. Like the remake of Dear Esther. Another video as well.

Yowza. Get to playin, heh.

If you get frustrated with Ep 1, keep truckin. It's short and Ep 2 is better.

Seriously though. You need to! Episode 1 has a few good moments- one area brought back feelings of playing HL1 IMO. Overall it is good if not average.
Episode 2 is grand though.

I installed it. Seems like it mostly made everything darker.

I still haven't tried it yet... It takes forever and a day to install.

OK I got it working... Also think I found something:

You have to manually install the new character models in the "Configurator" thing.

some quick screenshots from HL2:

Overall, I think I like it. I did turn up the HDR too much, so I will probably put it back on default.

It does look darker, but the lighting makes it feel much more atmospheric, IMO. I think it looks great.

*Edit* Wow... when you first step outside into that town square... it looks AMAZING. I won't even take a screenshot, it would spoil it.

few more things I noticed:

You can use the iron sights on guns (awesome with the SMG).
When one of those barrels explodes, there's an effect like embers floating in the area momentarily, and then fading.
The AI is beefed up.
A headshot is an instant kill (the same applies to player).

btw, I think in the configurator, there's an option for brightness.

Call me an idiot but where is the HDR settings?

Also - I figured out the character models need to be loaded after my last post. Huge difference.

I think it's the one that says "enable enhanced bloom effects".

Anyone recognize this area? Not sure what it looked like before, but I know that's not what it looked like before.

When you see stuff like this, it really does make it feel like a new game again... The civilian characters are much more diverse. Some are fat, some are Rastafarian, some wear glasses...
