dead HDD question

guys, my damn hdd died, so.... the thing is i try it on all ides, and it doesnt work, regular ides say its the 40g drive, the ata66 ides say its 20g!, if i put it as primary master i cant even boot from A:, it locks up after hdd detection, if i put it as slave to the other hdd i can boot, but not even fdisk sees it....

so, its dead right?

i tried diff. cables and i tried it on my dads pc too...

Try Spinrite at http://grc.com.
It's not cheap, but it does wonders.

OTOH, I forgot to ask what hardware do you have? Try stripping everything down to the barest essentials (CPU unit, video, floppy, HD) set everything to BIOS defaults and don't use any other ATA controllers other than what's on the board.

get a nother drive, put your broken one in the frezzer for a couple hours hook it up and try it. you can probably save some data. it sounds silly but it works

im gonna try some more, i think it might still be in warranty, but its gonna be tough.....

Drop it on a carpeted floor from a height of about 2 feet!!!

Honestly, sometimes it works!!!!

I've resurected 2 HDD's this way. Even the UK edition of computer shopper tells you to do it so it's not an old wives tale.

(Another variation is to put it on the floor and drop a really heavy book on it)

As a last resort try the freezer method Huber suggested. Just be really quick to get the data from it because when it warms up it will die (condensation inside).

LOL, the carpet thing is true, and let me tell you, i used cop´s method (aka the HAMMER!) a few times.... when its going ssssclack, sssssclack, a good hit will get it living

never on MY hdd though

damn thing spins up right, so i dont think it will work but ill try!

Or try this.

Take the drive out to the driveway and slowly drive over it with one tire of your car (you don't want to "burn out" on the drive.... Do that as a last resort). Check to see that it works. If not... slowlllly drive over it again.

Let me know if it works.

Last resort: flush it down the toilet and let the plummer fish it out for you from the local sewer. It'll spin shit extremely fast after that
