Good DLC, Bad DLC

I know the gamers here on the SCMB aren't the most happy bunch when it comes to DLC, tho that's a pretty common mindset across the internet anywhere. Post some DLC packs that you personally have experience with, and your thoughts on them.

DLC that should have been in the game that was essentially removed to be sold extra really irks me, as I'm sure it does everybody, but some DLC is truely additional content that was developed after the base game was released. Dragon Age is an example of a game that has both types of content, as it had DLC when it launched, but they followed it up with other DLC packs later.

Good DLC
Dead Rising 2 Case Zero - Fantastic prologue to Dead Rising 2. It introduced the player to Chuck and his daughter Katey, as they make their way to Fortune City. Chuck needs to get to the city so he can make money to keep buying Zombrex, which is the only thing keeping his daughter from turning into a zombie. Unfortunately, the town in Case Zero is overrun with zombies, so Chuck has to fight to acquire supplies and help the survivors of this town. What's cool about this game is the experience you acquired during it transfers over to Dead Rising 2, so you start with an extra attack or so and some life.

Dead Rising 2 Case West - Not as good as Case Zero, but Case West holds its own pretty well as far as DLC goes. It takes place at the science facility of the main bad guys of Dead Rising 2, as Chuck and Frank try to uncover conspiracies and all that.

Bad DLC
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Reverie - So Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a fantastic reboot of the series, but if you finished the game, you'll notice there is a big gap in the storyline. The two DLC packs they released are supposed to fill in the blanks, but pretty much they just fill Konami's pockets and leave you feeling completely cheated. This first DLC (for $10) essentially runs you through some really bad platforming levels and some pretty simplistic regular enemies, before giving you a fantastic "To be continued" message. No boss fight, just "hey give us another $10."

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Resurrection - The thrilling conclusion to the story? Not really. The story ends, sort of, but this DLC is even worse than the first one, which I wasn't even sure was possible. It's essentially one big boss fight, with some horrible, horrible platforming sections in between. If I hadn't died 30 times in the hour this DLC takes to finish, it would have taken me only 35-40 minutes to finish. $10 for 40 minutes of bad gameplay is almost highway robbery. Avoid these 2 DLCs like the plague that they are. Konami should be embarrassed to even release these for such a price. Had they been $5 for both of them, I probably wouldn't be as upset, tho they'd still suck.

BAD DLC: Right after the Wipeout Pulse (the second PSP Wipeout game) was released, half a dozen extra ships, teams and tracks started showing up in the PSstore which obviously were supposed to be in the game to begin with but were taken out to make an extra buck. They were between €2 and €5, adding up to an additional €15...

Same thing happened with the first PSP Wipeout (Pure), with one BIG DIFFERENCE: that DLC was FREE!!! But without all the extra stuff, you essentially only had half a game because the ships, teams and tracks were more than doubled with the additional content. It was so obvious it was all in there from the start but then taken out.

The only good DLC is the one they give you for free, like when you buy an older game at a greatly reduced price and you get all the additional stuff with it. The Force Unleashed on Steam had a bunch of extra stuff that was nice to have, but I wouldn't have been satisfied if I had to pay €10 for each of them on top of a €50 game.

Indeed. Portal 2 has a free DLC coming out in the near future supposedly, which will be nice. A couple of games on the 3DS have free DLC that is automatically downloaded and installed to the system so you see it the next time you fire up the game.

Good DLC

Fallout 3: I know folks aren't keen on a some of the installments and to be fair a couple weren't 'amazing' but they all have things worth doing/getting. They're available in one go if you pick up the GOTY edition; including one that wasn't released on a stand-alone disc...

Red Dead Redemption ~ Join the Rockstar Social Club (it's free) and get a spiffy grey suit that grants you the ability to cheat at cards.

Just Cause 2 ~ Free pimped out pink ice-cream truck & skull motif parachute. Nice.

Bad DLC

Dunno; never paid for anything other than Fallout 3 expansions and bought them on disc so they weren't even really 'DLC'.

Good and Bad DLC

Warden's Keep for Dragon Age. This DLC was actually out when the game launched, meaning they stripped it from the game to charge you for it later. I became a pretty diehard Dragon Age fan when it first came out, so I bought the DLC. To be honest, it was actually pretty cool, but I don't like that I had to buy it separately from the normal game. It also added a Stash that you could store items in, which the game didn't have by default.

Good DLC

The Stone Prisoner for Dragon Age - This one came with new copies of Dragon Age for free, so it wasn't as cruel as the Warden's Keep. The quest to get Shale was actually quite cool, and Shale was a great character in the game.

The Darkspawn Chronicles for Dragon Age - Ok now this was pretty legit. Basically you play a commander in the Darkspawn, and your goal is to kill off all the main characters of the game before they can kill the Archdemon. It was interesting to play as the enemy and see a different point of view, as well as commanding underlings around.

Good DLC: Mass Effect 2 - Lair of the Shadow Broker. Probably the best mission in the entire game, original content or not.

I've been considering the ME2 DLC for sometime... I might well snag it before the new one drops.

I sucessfully completed the intelligence mission working out who the Broker's contact was so it'd be interesting to follow it up.
