Sim City 4

Well, I installed Sim City 4 on my computer and while it runs there are quite a few artefacts on the screen. Mostly the cursor flickering and being invisible most of the time and it will often leave a trail when I drag it around the screen.

I've tried upgrading to the latest Kyro BIOS and updated to DirectX 9 to no avail. If anyone else has any ideas let me know. Thanks.

Oooh, blame it on the game... I see...

I've seen it running on a TNT 2 Pro (choppy scrolling), GF2 MX 400 (a little jittery) and a GeForce 3 (smooth) at work. The ATI Xpert 2K's though would alternate between showing the terrain as black and the buildings and cars.

Right now I'm running it with the software renderer. The cursor still flickers, but not so bad. The colors do seem a bit washed out though.

For the record I've passed the thread before my first reply over to PVR, if they have any feedback on it, they'll answer back. That's about as much as I can do anyway.

I was trying to get to pvr-net.com from home last night to see if anything had been posted there on the forums. I couldn't seem to get there though. Now I see some posts, mostly other people having problems.

I can play the game in software rendering mode, but would like to play in hardware mode, which would hopefully speed things up a bit.

I need to make friends with someone at PVR. If someone is reading this I'll gladly beta test Series 5 hardware (whatever it's called when it comes out).

I don't know what about a banana doing a hump-dance makes you so happy and I don't want to.

And when I say "make friends" I don't mean they can borrow money. I don't have any to lend right now.

Let me put this into perspective with a hint: with cheap boards chances are high that testing samples or the likes get handed out for free by the ton. With expensive boards it'll be limited numbers shipped to the most important addresses probably and they'll most likely will have to get returned I figure.

I was actually kidding since I'm out of the picture anyway, since I don't maintain a popular website and even PK2 is slowly close to get a quiet killing

I'll concentrate most likely what PVR concerns from now on to PVR Generations, the guys are currently setting up a chatroom albeit it isn't public yet

Exactly, and that's why I need to figure out a way to get on that short list of hardware testing candidates. A way that I can accomplish with my aforementioned lack of money.

It would be nice to see some more diversity in the video card market. Competition means cheaper prices for us, and I'm all about low prices. Trident really screwed up the XP4, that thing needed to be out last Christmas when Geforce 4 TI 4200's were having their heyday.

That Radeon 9700 keeps looking more and more enticing. The 9700 is $230 and the Pro version $270. Of course, a little BIOS flash and software tweak supposedly turns a $175 9500 Pro into a 9700... Anyone interested in buying a kidney?

Maybe I didn't make it clear enough: no free boards this time; cards too expensive. Better now?

If you want a good upgrade anytime soon (outside of the apparent jokes) the vanilla 9700 is almost a steal for it's money. I wouldn't buy that much into the moding stuff because the success rate isn't as high as someone would expect. You'd gamble with your luck so to speak.

I'd give it back, honest.

I'll probably go with the Radeon 9700 in the end. It's not as expensive as the Pro but has all the features, unlike the 9500 flavors. I generally don't overclock on a regular basis and it isn't a requisite when I'm buying hardware.

I was hoping last year to have money for an upgrade but that didn't happen. Now I'm counting on my income tax returns, but we'll see how that works out...

Well it's too early yet but when and if the time comes you can always mail David Harold (you can find his address at www.imgtec.com I don't have it handy right now) and try your luck.
