Some info on DOOM3

"A game like DooM3 is using more than 20 texture passes right now, wich means the game will be almost unplayable on older GeForces and feature-disabled on 3dfx and/or ATi cards."

yes and im sure the Geforce3 with its 4 textures per pass could get over 5 FPS at 1024x768. what a joke.

well even 8-layer won't save the day if that should be true.

But ain't 20 texture passes a bit too much? Sounds like that even the next generation cards (after the gf3) will choke on that one.

thats really a joke. with pixel and vertex shaders, you dont 20 texture layers to get good visual results.

that's not the only issue here. The biggest issue seems to be the colour rendering value. It should look ugly with 32bit cards.

And I have no idea if overbright lighting (as in 52bits internal) would be enough, as Carmack's asking for higher colour precisions internally and externally.

Why overpump a game that much?

yeah adding depth, 52-64, would do a lot to make the game look better, but the bandwith constraints would be so extreme. :o

AFAIK you have minimal performance penalties with internal 52bit, but 64 bits internal and external sounds like even slower than the very first 32bit cards.....

64bit would require 2x the bandwith of 32bit. think i remember reading bout this on Beyond3D.

Who the freak cares?

Doom 3 is not that impressive anyways. And quite honestly, why are people trying to take a game that is not scheduled to be out for another year, probably realistically will be out in 2 years, and figgure out how it will run on todays technology. That's like comparing 286 technology when it was at it's best to how it would run quake 3. Honestly!

That is simply BS.

Carmack said in a past .plan update that some work he was doing involved 20+ texture layers. That doesn't at all mean Doom3 will use that many textures. The author of that article took speculation, educated guessing, uneducated guessing, and unrelated and irrelevant comments from the past and mixed 'em together. The result is an article that is interesting in some spots, but mostly innaccurate.
