[H]ardocp on 5950! (a good read imo)

Check it out, it puts things pretty much the way they really are.

However, if you'd like a review that favours nVidia, check Tom's gay ass weinands article on the same card.

I can't believe that nVidia used to rip on 3dfx over the size of the V5

Theres that too...

Seriously though. It's one thing to be the highest price card when you are the clear performance leader. But to do the same when falling so woefully behind the leader? WTF is that about?

A nice shiny box, and maybe a game or two.

Ouch! I wish I had that money to spend on a new video card.

[Edit]
Hell that is by far much more than what a gaming console costs!

Point is: they are comparible in price, but not in performance. 5950 looks like a 350-400 card to me, not 500. Ati has gone from "bang for the buck leader" to "youd be an idiot to buy the other guy" IMO.

I'm speaking from this:
Quote:
Comparing the GeForceFX5950 Ultra with the Radeon 9800XT is really a no-brainer. If you want the best IQ, such as AA and AF combined with DX9 performance, the ATI Radeon 9800XT is still HardOCP's card of choice. Both the Radeon 9800XT and the GeForceFX 5950 Ultra are priced at MSRP $499. When we sit here and look back at the performance and image quality obtained in this preview as well as special XT perks, like a full single and multiplayer version Half Life 2, we really can come to only one conclusion. The Radeon 9800XT is the better buy; you simply get more for your money compared to the GeForceFX 5950Ultra.

The 5950 is not the performance leader.. and they are charging more.. what the hell has been happening to nvidia? this entire FX series has been a total and complete flop - the new radeons are just killing anything nvidia puts out... they better get there act together, I already got my money on ATI for my next card, to replace this weary 4200.

bingo. Look, I have no problem in spending 500 bucks on a Video Card if its actually a top of the line video card. You know what? To me, the 5950 simply isn't comparable performance/quality wise to the 9800XT; it isn't even, in my book, a top of the line card. The 9800XT is top of the line in every respect.

Yeah...that and $50. Subtract $50 form the retail 5950 and you get the OEM price....which is $50 less than the OEM price for the XT

If you cut through the fact that this guy likes NVIDIA, you get a pretty neutral review. He tells you the good and bad points of the cards and uses benchmarks that aren't the standard to avoid the driver cheating possibility. The way I see it, the 9800XT is at the top no doubt. Fine....performance wise, the numbers show that the 5950 competes well with the 9800pro....which is not too shabby. It's a brand new product.....the price will drop eventually.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/88/

Hopefully nvidia will bring something new to us soon in terms of architecture that brings the competition back to level.

PS- How does ATI go about packaging HL2 with the 9800XT if the game does not yet exist?

They got the source off BitTorrent and compiled it themselves.
