Wireless/Wired Router
Straight to the chase, What's a good one? I'm heading off to college in 3 weeks or so, and i'll probably be taking a Labtop with me to college as well as my desktop. A 4 port switch is necessary, as well as G connectivity, A isn't necesssary cause A sucks, and i don't use B.
I need the router for a firewall, because at the university im going to they have no firewall or anything setup, and you can access everyones computer on the network, so i'd like a little protection inbetween me and them. Secure wireless is good too. Right now i'm looking at this one. http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=35&prid=565 It looks pretty, and it has about all the features i would need. VPN is a luxury, but, i may use it. Doubtful but you never know. Any suggestions?

![]() I gotta protect myself! The only thing they have i think is a router for DHCP, but as for anything else, thats it. They have minimal outside protection, which is probably all you really need, but inside the network is a different story. It's more for protecting myself from the kids at the campus, since im sure some little shithead will try to hack into my computer just because he think's he's so l33t.

Do you need speed ? If so the Xtreme G series from Dlink is rated a 108 mbps, it's a 802.11 G so you can setup WEP or WAP security. Of course there is the usual VPN and firewall features.
I myself bought the following : http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Pro...rod=318&site=c Quite easy to setup and with the SMC software you can easily configure the WEP or WAP on your PCI / USB / PMCIA adapters.

Wireless speed isn't what im looking for, i'd only use the wireless connection for internet and transferring documents. Speeds always nice though if it's at a reasonable price though . I'm trying to stay under 100$, but the linksys one i mentioned is running around 130$, but i'd be willing to pay a few extra for a better quality product. Is it possible to have it setup so that my labtop automatically syncs my documents with my desktop? Like when i come in from class with notes and papers or whatever, could it automatically start syncing my documents when it comes into contact with the router? And vice versa with the desktop.

Nevermind about the linksys, read some horrible reviews on it. 90% of reviews are pointing to "Horrible".

If you want a solid, cheap wireless router, the Netgear MR814 is hard to beat. It's 802.11b, but you said you weren't that interested in the higher speed. It's a snap to set up, and works great. You should be able to find it on sale at one of the BB, CC, etc. stores for around $40-50.
